Stitch patterns:
- K2, p2 ribbing in the round:
*k2, p2*

Using the white yarn, cast on 64 sts and distribute them onto four needles: 20 sts, 12 sts, 12 sts and 20 sts. The beginning of the round is always between needles I and IV.

Begin the ribbing in the round: p1, *k2, p2* repeat from * to *. Each needle begins with p1. Work in ribbing for 3 cm.

Change to the multi-coloured yarn and begin the lace stripes and the stockinette stitch from row 1 of chart. The arrow marks the starting point for needle I. Work 9 sts in the lace pattern, 14 sts in stockinette stitch and then the 18 st pattern repeat from the chart, 14 sts in stockinette stitch and then the remaining 9 sts from the right end of the chart. Keep working the stitches in this manner. First knit row 1 of the chart and then keep repeating rows 2-9.

When the leg measures 15 cm, begin the decreases for the calf on needles I and IV on both sides of the lace stripe on the back of the sock: in the beginning of the round work 9 sts in pattern, k2tog and when 11 sts remain, make the skp decrease (= slip 1, knit 1, pass the slipped st over) and then work the remaining 9 sts in pattern. Repeat the decreases as before on every 8th round once more and then on every 4th round 6 more times. Now 12 sts remain on each needle.

Continue working as established until the leg measures approx. 35 cm and you have just finished row 9 of the chart.

Begin the heel flap by knitting the sts from needle I onto needle IV = 24 sts. Leave the other sts on hold. Turn work, join the white yarn and begin the reinforced stitch pattern: 1st row: slip 1 and purl to the end of row. Turn work. 2nd row: *slip 1, k1*, repeat from * to * for 11 more times. Repeat rows 1-2 for a total of 12 times (= 24 rows). Work row 1 once more.

Turn the heel: Continue working in the same reinforced stitch pattern as before. Starting from the right end of the heel flap, knit until 9 sts remain. Make the skp decrease and turn work. Slip 1, p6, p2tog, turn work. Slip 1, knit until 8 sts remain, skp. Continue in this manner, decreasing the stitches on the sides while the number of sts in the center of the heel remains the same (=8 sts). When you have only these 8 sts remaining, divide the sts onto two needles (4 sts and 4 sts). Break the white yarn and continue with the multi-coloured yarn.

Using a free needle, pick up 12 sts from the left edge of the heel flap and 1 st from between the needles. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop using the multi-coloured yarn onto needle I. Knit the sts on needles II and III following row 2 of the lace chart. Pick up 12 sts from the right edge of the heel flap and 1 st from between the needles and knit the picked-up sts through the back loop onto needle IV. Keep knitting with these 58 sts and begin the gusset decreases. For needles II and III keep following the lace chart as before and knit stockinette stitch on needles I and IV.

Work the gusset decreases: On needle I, knit until 2 sts remain, k2tog. On needle IV skp, knit to end of needle. Repeat these decreases every 2nd row until 12 sts remain on all needles.

Work as established until the sole measures 19 cm or until the sock reaches the tip of your smallest toe.

Toe decreases: Needles I and III: knit until 3 sts remain, k2tog, k1. Needles II and IV: k1, skp, knit to end. Continue knitting the lace until you run out of lace sts and then switch to working 2 sts in the middle of the stockinette in reverse stockinette stitch. Make the decreases as before on every 2nd round until 6 sts remain on each needle and after that make the decreases on every round.

When 8 sts remain in total, break the yarn and pull it through the sts. Securely weave in the yarn ends.

Knit the other sock to match.
