Knit to Connect

About Us

A family-run business going back nearly 100 years, Novita is the largest yarn spinner in the Nordics with our own spinning mill in Koria, Finland.

To create our yarn, we use high-quality wool sourced mainly from the northern hemisphere – every single skein we produce is directly connected to nature and the Nordic design tradition which we are committed to preserving and passing on to the next generation.

We want to encourage everyone to explore their creativity and to inspire them to create their own sustainable fashions. Every hand-worked stitch is an opportunity to experience a sense of achievement, a joy that grows as it is shared with others. Knitting can often be a solitary activity, but through Novita, you are instantly connected to an entire global community, a group of like-minded individuals that care.

Knit to Connect

Although knitting can often be a solitary activity, at its core, it is about connection: with your own creativity, with the present moment, with other knitters, with tradition, with nature, with the latest trends, with a sense of inner calm. At Novita, we want to create and build on these meaningful connections, one stitch at a time.

Our Patterns

We are committed to bringing a new inclusivity to the world of fashion. Hand-made clothes are the height of chic and wonderfully affordable too. This kind of slow fashion is the perfect antidote, not only to the fast fashion responsible for destroying our environment, but also to our hectic and screen-obsessed lives. Every single Novita knitting pattern is the result of truly unique expertise, decades of experience and a genuine passion for design with a Nordic twist.

All Yarns

For the Love of Wool

Sheep’s wool is our fibre of choice. The majority of Novita wool comes from Europe, mainly England. In addition to the geographical location, we also care deeply about the characteristics of the wool we use. Sheep that spend their lives surrounded by cool, clean air produce fleeces that are both soft and strong and can be spun into yarn that is as beautiful as it is joyful to work with. Many of our products are made at our very own factory in Koria, Finland.

A Century of Heritage

Novita is a fourth-generation, family-owned business going back nearly 100 years. Our story begins in 1928 when our founder, Ernst Gylfe, set off in pursuit of his dream to make high-quality yarn available to everyone in Finland. In order to learn how to spin soft and smooth combed wool, he travelled to Bradford, England, widely known as the cradle of the European yarn spinning and textile industry. On his return to Helsinki, he built Finland’s first ever spinning mill for combed wool. Until then, only inferior carded wool had been used here.

Novita has been spinning wool in Finland for almost a century. For the past 50 years, we have been based in Koria, having relocated here from Helsinki’s Lauttasaari island in 1974. Today, we produce around one million kilos, or 10 million skeins, of wool every year – enough to make five million pairs of woolly socks!

Sustainability

The clothes we make ourselves by hand are a form of slow fashion, the perfect antidote to the fast fashion that is destroying our environment. A garment you have stitched yourself is like no other: it will mean so much more, and you will want to look after it and wear it again and again.

We are proud of our Finnish spinning mill and use high-quality wool that is sourced mainly from the northern hemisphere. Wool growing is energy efficient, the material is both renewable and recyclable and can last for decades when well looked after. The sheep are not harmed in any way during production. In fact, shearing is done to improve their quality of life. We make every effort to source our wool from as close to us as possible to minimise transport impacts and to reduce emissions. This also allows us to ensure the welfare of the sheep that produce our wool.

Creating sustainable yarns matters to us, and we are committed to looking after our staff, but we also want to generate wellbeing for all in the widest possible sense. That is why our charitable partners are close to our hearts and integral to everything that we do. We regularly donate both funds and materials to projects that are designed to bring people together.

We process around 1 million kilos of wool annually, the majority of which comes from European sources

Our factory and Novita Ltd have been carbon neutral since 2020.

Our factory in Koria uses EKOenergia-certified electricity and domestic biogas

Charity – every year, we donate in excess of EUR 200,000 to charitable causes committed to promoting wellbeing for humans and the environment alike

Join Our Wonderful Community

Over the years, we have been able to create a close and active community of knitters united by their shared passion and their desire to share their experience and expertise.

Knitting can be a solitary activity, but through Novita you will have access to a global community of knitters that gathers both online and face-to-face. Everyone is welcome.
