Discover your inner sock artist! Novita sock masters Minna Metsänen and Sisko Sälpäkivi have joined forces to create a gorgeous new design that’s inspired by the Kirpilä Art Collection in Helsinki. The pattern will be released in sections as part of knit-along event. Knitted with Novita 7 Veljestä yarn, using cable, lace and textural techniques, they are an enjoyable challenge for all knitters whether new or experienced. The designers have created four distinctive colorways for you to choose from, but with a wide variety of shades available, the sky is the limit for you to come up with your own artistic interpretations. Join us as we turn stitches into art!

Part 1

Cast on 80 sts using Yarn 4 and divide onto four needles, 20 sts each. Needle 1 marks the start of a new round. This is the center back.

Join to work in the round and begin the lace cable pattern at Row 1 of Chart 1 and work the 5-st pattern repeat 16 times. Work chart rows 2–12. Break Yarn 4.

Join Yarn 3 and work Row 13. Work Row 14 while increasing as set in chart (4 sts) = 84 sts. Set aside Yarn 3.

Join Yarn 1 and work rows 15–18. Leave Yarn 1 attached.

Continue in Yarn 3, working rows 19–20. Break Yarn 3.

Part 2

Continue in Yarn 1. Work Rows 21–36. Work Row 31 as you decrease by 1 at the beginning and end of row = 82 sts. Redistribute stitches between needles to maintain cable pattern. Once the pattern is complete, distribute sts as set in chart: 20, 21, 21 and 20 sts.

Join Yarn 2. Begin colorwork with Yarn 1 as main color and Yarn 2 as contrasting color. Work Rows 37–41. Please note that textured stitches will be worked on Row 38 using Yarn 2. Break Yarn 2.

Part 3

Join Yarn 3. Resume colorwork from Row 42 with Yarn 1 as main color and Yarn 3 as contrasting color. Work chart rows 43–59. Work decreases on rows44, 48, 55 and 59 as set in chart. You now have a total of 72 sts on your needles. Break yarn.

Redistribute stitches on your needles, 18 sts each.

Join Yarn 4 and begin lace pattern from Row 60. Work Rows 61–70 decreasing on Row 64 (skip first and last yo) and Row 69. You now have 68 sts. Break yarn.

Redistribute sts as follows: 18, 16, 16 and 18 sts.

Part 4

Join Yarn 1. Resume colorwork as per Row 71 of chart. Work Row 72. Join Yarn 2. Continue in pattern from Row 73 with Yarn 1 as main color and Yarn 2 as contrasting color. Work chart rows 74–83. Work decreases on rows 74 and 79 = 64 sts. Break Yarn 2.

Join Yarn 3. Continue in pattern from Row 84 with Yarn 1 as main color and Yarn 3 as contrasting color. Work Rows 85–89. Work decreases on rows 84 and 89 = 60 sts. Break Yarn 3.

Join Yarn 4. Continue in pattern from Row 90 with Yarn 1 as main color and Yarn 4 as contrasting color. Work Rows 91–99. Work decreases on rows 94 and 99 = 56 sts. Break yarn. Redistribute sts = 14 sts each.

Part 5

Now start the heel flap by transferring the sts on Needle 1 onto Needle 4 = 28 sts. Leave the remaining sts for now. Join Yarn 2 and purl this WS row while decreasing 1 st = 27 sts.

Turn your work and work in heel stitch as follows:

Row 1 (RS): *slip one st with yarn in back (= sl1 wyib), k1*, repeat *–* until 1 st remains, k1. Turn your work.

Row 2 (WS): sl1 wyib, and purl remaining sts to end. Turn your work.

Repeat Rows 1–2 12 times = 24 rows.

Now work the heel decreases continuing in heel stitch as above. Work the RS row until until 9 sts remain. Now skp (slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass slipped st over) and turn your work. Sl1, p9, p2tog and turn your work. Sl1, knit until 8 sts remain, skp. Continue to work these decreases from the sides, always keeping 11 sts in the middle of your work. When no more side sts remain, divide your heel sts between two needles, 5 sts on Needle 1 and 6 sts on Needle 4. Break Yarn 2.

Using Needle 1, pick up 12 sts from the left side of the heel flap + 1 st between the needles. Using Needle 4, pick up 12 sts from the other side of the heel flap + 1 st between the needles. You now have a total of 65 sts.

Join Yarn 1 and knit 1 row (beginning of row is at center of heel flap), knitting all picked up sts tbl (= through the back loop). Note: Dec 1 at the start of Needle 2 by k2tog (outlined in blue). You now have 64 sts.

Join Yarn 3. Work in pattern with Yarn 1 as main color and Yarn 3 as contrasting color. Continue as set in Row 2 of Chart 2. Work chart rows 2–10 and then work gusset decreases as indicated. You now have 54 sts, 13 sts each on Needles 1 and 2 and 14 sts each on Needles 3 and 4. Break Yarn 3.

Join Yarn 4. Work in pattern with Yarn 1 as main color and Yarn 4 as contrasting color. Work chart rows 11–20. Break Yarn 4.
