Heel
Begin the short row heel here by knitting the sts on Needle 1 onto Needle 4 using Tide = 32(34) sts. Set the remaining 32(34) sts aside for now.
Work this section back and forth in stockinette. Turn your work and begin the short rows here: make DS at beginning of row. Purl to end of Needle 4, turn your work, make DS. *Knit up to the previous DS, turn your work and make DS*. Repeat *–* until there are 10(11) DS at each end of your needle and 12(12) sts in the middle. Place stitch markers to mark the 12 middle sts. Work 2 rounds in stockinette (all sts), taking care to work all DS as single sts on the first round.
Now go back to working flat in stockinette as you begin your increasing short rows: work the 12 middle sts + 1 st and turn your work. Make DS, p13, turn your work, make DS. *Work across to the previous DS, work this DS as single st, k1, turn your work and make DS*. Repeat *–* until you have 32(34) sts and the side sts are all DS. Divide across two needles, 16(17) sts on each. Work the 16(17) sts on the right. This is now the beginning of a new round.
Foot
Continue in pattern from Row 3 of Chart 2 and work remaining DS as single sts. Work Rows 4–23 of Chart 2 and repeat Rows 1–23 once more.
Knit 2 rounds in stockinette using Tide.
For size 40/41 (US9/10), work Rows 1–9 of Chart 1.
Finish the sock in stockinette in the round using Tide. When the foot measures 19(20) cm (7.5/8 in) or covers the little toe, begin toe decreases (wedge decreases) as follows: at the end of Needle 1 and Needle 3, skp + k1 and at the start of Needle 2 and Needle 4 k1 + k2tog. Repeat these decreases 3 times on every third round and then on every round until 8 sts remain. Break yarn and draw through the stitches to fasten off.
Repeat to make second sock.
Finishing
Weave in loose ends. To block, wet your project carefully and reshape then leave to dry. Alternatively, steam your knitting gently.
