Stitch patterns:
- Garter stitch (knitted flat): knit all rows.
- Lace pattern: knit following the chart and the written instructions.
Gauge 20 sts and 35 rows of garter stitch = 10 cm
Note: The shawl is knitted starting at the midpoint of the top edge. Increases are worked on all rows at both ends of the work.
Cast on 6 sts.
Row 1: k1, kfb (knit the stitch through the front and back loop = increase), k2, kfb, k1. 2 sts increased, 8 sts on the needle.
Row 2: k2, yarn over (yo), k1, yo, k2, yo, k1, yo, k2. 4 sts increased, 12 sts on the needle. From now on, knit the yarn overs through the back loop.
Row 3: k3, yo, knit until 3 sts remain, yo, k3. 2 sts increased.
Row 4: k2, yo, knit until 2 sts remain, yo, k2. 2 sts increased.
Row 5: k3, yo, knit until 3 sts remain, yo, k3. 2 sts increased.
Row 6: k2, yo, k3, make 1 (m1 = pick up the strand of yarn between the stitches and knit it through the back loop), knit until 5 sts remain, m1, k3, yo, k2. 4 sts increased.
Keep repeating rows 3-6 (a total of 10 sts increased on every sequence of 4 rows).
When the piece measures approx. 50 cm at midpoint, loosely bind off the stitches: k2, move the sts back onto the left-hand needle and k2tog through the back loop. *k1, move the 2 sts from the right-hand needle onto the left-hand needle and knit them together through the back loop*, repeat *-* to end of row. Break the yarn.
Lace border: Cast on 17 sts and knit through the WS row. Begin the lace pattern from row 1 of chart and work through the chart. Note: The chart only displays RS rows. On the WS rows, knit all stitches and yarn overs. Repeat rows 3-26 until the lace border matches the length of the curved edge of the shawl. Do not break the yarn.
Finishing
Shape the shawl and steam it lightly.
Begin attaching the lace border onto the curved edge (bind-off edge). Sew 2 rows of the lace onto each stitch on the shawl, using only the purl stitches. Attach the lace border alongside the width of the shawl, adjusting the length of the lace if needed. Be careful not to sew the lace on too tightly. Steam the lace lightly.
