21 sts to 10 cm measured over stocking st

Leg

Using spring green yarn and double-pointed needles cast on 52[64] sts loosely. Distribute sts over 4 of the 5 needles ( =16[20] sts on needle I. and IV. and 10[12] sts on needle II. and III.) and, taking care not to twist cast-on edge and using 5th needle, work in rounds as follows:

Work in rib in round 3 cm. Knit 1 rnd. Beg and ending rnds as indicated, cont in patt from chart as folls:

Rnd 1: work in patt according to chart, patt might not be even in the back of sock.

Work until leg meas 9[15] cm. Beg decreases:

Dec rnd: Needle I.: K1, K2tog, patt to end of needle I.

Needle II. and III.: cont in patt,

Needle IV.: patt to last 3 sts, sl1, K1, psso, K1.

Rep dec rnd every 8th rnd once and every 4th rnd 4(6) times = 40[48] sts.

Work until leg meas 26[33] cm. Beg increases:

Inc rnd: Needle I.: K1, M1 (=make one stitch by picking up horizontal loop before next stitch and knitting into back of it), patt to end of needle I.

Needle II. and III.: cont in patt,

Needle IV.: patt to last st, M1, K1.

Rep inc rnd every alt rnd twice more= 46[54] sts (= 13[15] sts on needle I. and IV.)

Heel Opening

Next rnd: work sts on needle I. and IV. using waste yarn, work other sts as given.

Work 2 rnds.

Dec rnd: Needle I.: K2tog, patt to end of needle I.

Needle II. and III.: cont in patt,

Needle IV.: patt to last 2 sts, sl1, K1, psso.

Rep dec rnd every 4th rnd until the amount of sts is 40[48].

Foot

Cont in patt until foot meas 9[12] cm. Heel worked later will add to foot's length.

Toe

Using spring green yarn only cont in stocking st in round.

Rnd 1: Needle I. : work until you have 3 sts left on needle I., K2tog, K1

Needle II. : K1, sl1,K1,psso, work to end of needle II.

Needle III.: work until you have 3 sts left on needle III., K2tog, K1

Needle IV: K1, sl1,K1,psso, work to end of needle IV.

Work 1 rnd.

Rep rnd 1 every alt rnd until the amount of sts is 24.

Rep rnd 1 every rnd until the amount of sts is 8. Break yarn leaving a long end. Pull end through all sts and tighten it. Weave in all ends.

Heel

Unravel waste yarn andAT THE SAME TIMEpick up 25[29] sts from top, 1 st from corner and 26[30] sts from bottom edge to form a heel opening = 52[60] sts. Distribute sts over 4 needles (= 13[15] sts on each needle). Work in round.

Knit 1 rnd.

Rnd 1: Needle I. : work until you have 3 sts left on needle I., K2tog, K1

Needle II. : K1, sl1,K1,psso, work to end of needle II.

Needle III.: work until you have 3 sts left on needle III., K2tog, K1

Needle IV: K1, sl1,K1,psso, work to end of needle IV.

Work 1 rnd.

Rep rnd 1 every alt rnd until the amount of sts is 20. Using kitchener stitch join sts.

To Make Up

Lightly steam the socks.
