'Ostrobothnian Romance' knitted socks Novita 7 Veljestä
These colourwork socks are inspired by traditional Ostrobothnian motifs. The possible colour combinations are endless, from burgundy, grey and white to the ever-reliable black, white and grey. Knitted from Novita 7 Veljestä.

Leg
Cast on 60 sts using the off-white yarn and divide them onto four needles, 15 sts each. The beginning of the round is between needles I and IV.
Begin the textured st pattern in the round following chart I. Repeat rows 1-4 a total of 6 times.
Then work rows 5-7.
Begin the colourwork pattern from row 8 of the chart and at the same time increase 1 st at the end of each needle (= knit the strand of yarn between the sts through the back loop, using the off-white). 4 sts increased, 64 sts on the needles.
Work rows 9-38 of the chart. On row 38, decrease 1 st at the end of each needle by k2tog = 60 sts.
Work rows 39-49.
Work rows 50-60. 20 st pattern repeated 3 times.
Work rows 61-73.
Heel
Begin the heel flap: using the off-white yarn, knit the sts on needle I onto needle IV (= 30 sts). Leave the other sts on hold. Turn work and begin the reinforced st pattern:
Row 1: (WS) slip 1, purl to end. Turn work.
Row 2: (RS) *slip 1, knit 1*, repeat *-* 12 more times.
Row 3: (WS) slip 1, purl to end. Turn work.
Repeat rows 2-3 until the heel flap measures 27 rows and you have just finished a WS row.
Turning the heel: keep working the reinforced st pattern as before. On the heel flap, work a RS row until 11 sts remain at the other end. Work the skp decrease (= slip 1 knitwise, knit 1, pass the slipped st over) and turn work. Slip 1 purlwise, p8, p2tog, turn work. Slip 1, work until 10 sts remain, skp. Continue in the same manner, decreasing sts on the sides with 10 sts in the middle. When only the middle sts remain, distribute them onto two needles, 5 sts each. K5 to move the yarn between needles I and IV.
Foot
Pick up 13 sts from the edge of the heel flap onto needle I and another 13 sts from the other edge onto needle IV. 66 sts on the needles.
Begin the colourwork pattern from row 1 of chart II. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop. Work rows 2-14 of the chart. Work the gusset decreases following the chart at the end of needle I and beginning of needle IV (rows 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13). 54 sts on the needles.
Distribute the sts: 14 sts on needles I and IV, 13 sts on needles II and III.
Continue the colourwork pattern from row 1 of chart III. 1 st decreased at the end of needle I and beginning of needle IV. 52 sts on the needles, 13 sts each.
Work rows 2-14 of chart III.
Use the off-white yarn and work stockinette st for the rest of the sock. Begin the toe decreases. K2tog, k1 at the end of needles I and III, k1, skp at the beginning of needles II and IV. Work the decreases every 2nd round until 9 sts remain on each needle. Then work the decreases on every round until 8 sts remain in total.
Break the yarn, pull it through the sts, and securely weave in.
Knit the other sock to match.

Steam the socks lightly.
