Novita Majakkasaari and Muumitalo: Tyrsky socks

Winner of Novita’s autumn 2020 striped yarn sock competition, these socks by Stiina Iloniemi are knitted by striping the Novita Majakkasaari and Muumitalo yarns. The vertical stripes are created using a slip stitch pattern. The jury adored the texture of the fabric, which makes for a pair of simple and beautiful socks.

Stitch patterns Twisted ribbing in the round: *k1 through back loop, p1*

Using the striped Majakkasaari yarn, begin at a colour change and cast on 50(60)70 sts. Divide the sts onto four needles: 12 sts on needles I and III and 13 sts on needles II and IV (15 sts each) 17 sts on needles I and III and 18 sts on needles II and IV. Work twisted ribbing in the round for 10 rounds.

Join Muumitalo and begin the slip stitch pattern:

Round 1 (Muumitalo): k2, slip 1 purlwise with yarn in back, *k9, slip 1 purlwise with yarn in back*, repeat *–* until 7 sts remain, k7.

Round 2 (Majakkasaari): k7, slip 1 purlwise with yarn in back, *k9, slip 1 purlwise with yarn in back*, repeat *–* until 2 sts remain, k2.

Keep repeating rounds 1–2 until you have worked for approx. 8(10)12 cm after the ribbing. Finish with round 1. Break off Muumitalo and knit the heel flap with Majakkasaari.

For sizes 30 and 46 , distribute the sts as follows: 15(15) sts on needle I, 13(18) sts on needle II, 12(17) sts on needle III, 10(20) sts on needle IV.

Begin the heel flap: knit the sts on needle I onto needle IV = 25(30)35sts. Leave the other sts on hold. Turn work and begin reinforced stitch pattern:

Row 1: (WS) slip 1 with yarn in front, purl to end. Turn work.

Row 2: (RS) *slip 1 with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *–* to end of row, then, on sizes 30 and 46 only, k1. Turn work.

Work rows 1–2 a total of 12(15)17 times = 24(30)34 rows.

Work the WS row once more and begin French heel turn:

Row 1: (RS) slip 1 with yarn in back, k13(16)19, skp (slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass the slipped st over), k1. Turn work.

Row 2: (WS) slip 1 with yarn in front, p4(5)6, p2tog, p1. Turn work.

Row 3: (RS) slip 1 with yarn in back, knit to last st before gap, skp, k1. Turn work.

Row 4: (WS) slip 1 with yarn in front, purl to last st before gap, p2tog, p1. Turn work.

Keep repeating rows 3–4 until you decrease at the very edge (leave the last k1 and p1 unworked and turn work right after the decrease).

Distribute the heel flap sts onto two needles. On sizes 30 and 46 there is an odd number of sts; place the middle st on the right-side needle. Slip the first st on the right and knit the other sts. The beginning of round is now here.

Using a free needle, pick up 12(15)17 sts from the left end of the heel flap + 1 st from between the flap and needle II. Knit the remaining heel flap sts and knit the picked-up sts through the back loop. Note: Knit the last picked-up st and the extra st together through the back loop. On needles II and III, work as established. Pick up 1 st from between needle III and the heel + 12(15)17 sts from the right end of the heel flap. Knit the extra st and the first flap st together through the back loop and knit the other picked-up sts through the back loop. Knit the sts on the right side of the heel flap.

Rejoin Muumitalo. On needles I and IV, work stockinette st alternating the Muumitalo and Majakkasaari yarns. On needles II and III, work slip stitch pattern as established. At the same time, workgusset decreases on every other round: onneedle I, work to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; on needle IV, k1, skp, work to end. Keep repeating the decreases until there are the same number of sts on the needles as in the beginning.

Continue until the sole measures approx. 15(20)25 cm or the sock covers the fifth toe. Finish with a round in Majakkasaari. Break the Muumitalo yarn and begin toe decreases: at the end of needles I and III, k2tog, k1; at the beginning of needles II and IV, k1, skp. Repeat the decreases on every other round until 30(32)34 sts remain. Then work the decreases twice on every round. Knit to end of needle I and graft the sts together. Break yarn and weave in.

Knit the other sock in the same manner.

Note: If you want the size 38 socks to mirror each other, begin the slip stitch pattern in the other sock as follows:

Round 1 (Muumitalo): k7, slip 1 purlwise with yarn in back, *k9, slip 1 purlwise with yarn in back*, repeat *–* until 2 sts remain, k2.

Round 2 (Majakkasaari): k2, slip 1 purlwise with yarn in back, *k9, slip 1 purlwise with yarn in back*, repeat *–* until 7 sts remain, k7.

Keep repeating rounds 1–2.

Finishing
