Ribbing in the round: *k1, p1*
Using the smaller needles and Charcoal, cast on 50(60)70 sts and divide them onto four needles. Work ribbing in the round for 2,5 cm, then knit 1 round.
Begin the colourwork pattern on row 1 of the chart. Work the 10 st pattern repeat 5(6)7 times. Work rows 2-40 of the chart, then keep repeating rows 1-40. Make sure to loosen the floats as you work to avoid a too tight fabric.
When the leg measures 14(15)16 cm, mark the spot for the afterthought heel: knit the first 25(30)35 sts using a different-coloured yarn. Move the sts back to the left-hand needle and knit them again following the chart. Continue working the pattern until the sock measures 12(13)16 cm from the heel or until the foot is 8(9)10 cm from desired length. Break off Saffron and knit 1 round using Charcoal.
Begin toe decreases: at the beginning of needles I and III, k1, k2tog; at the end of needles II and IV, skp (= slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass slipped st over), k1. Work the decreases as established on every other round 6(8)10 more times = 22(24)26 sts.
Redistribute the sts onto two needles, 11(12)13 sts each on the sole and instep. Graft the sts together.
Afterthought heel:Remove the scrap yarn. Pick up 25(30)35 sts from both edges of the heel opening and 2 additional sts from both ends of the heel = 54(64)74 sts. Divide the sts evenly onto four needles, with the beginning of round between the 2 sts at one of the side edges = 27(32)37 sts on both sides. Work 2 rounds in stockinette st using Charcoal.
Begin decreases: at the beginning of needles I and III, k1, k2tog; at the end of needles II and IV, skp, k1. Work the decreases as established on every other round 6(8)10 more times = 26(28)30 sts. Redistribute the sts onto two needles, 13(14)15 sts on each side. Graft the sts together.
Knit the other sock in the same manner.
Finishing
