Double-pointed needles: Novita 2½ mm (UK 12½ / US 1½) or size needed to obtain gauge
Stitch patterns:
- Twisted ribbing in the round:
*k1 through back loop, p1*
Start
Using Mugwort cast on 92 sts and divide them across four needles, 23 sts each. The beginning of round is between needles I and IV.
Work twisted ribbing in the round for 10 rounds, then knit 1 round.
Begin the colourwork pattern on row 1 of chart I. Work the 92 st pattern. Work rows 2–182 of the chart. Make sure to maintain gauge throughout! 22 sts decreased on needles I and IV, 70 sts on the needles.
Redistribute the sts: 17 sts needle I + 18 sts needle II + 18 sts needle III + 17 sts needle IV.
Begin heel flap: using Off White knit the sts on needle I onto needle IV = 34 sts. Leave the other sts on hold and turn work. WS: slip 1 with yarn in back, purl to end. Turn work.
Reinforced stitch pattern :
Row 1: (RS) *slip 1 with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *–* to end. Turn work.
Row 2: (WS) slip 1 with yarn in back, purl to end. Turn work.
Work rows 1–2 a total of 17 times (= 34 rows).
Keep working the reinforced st pattern as established and begin turning the heel: work until 12 sts remain at the left end of the heel flap. Skp (= slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass slipped st over), turn work. Slip 1, p10, p2tog, turn work. Slip 1, work to last 11 sts, skp. Continue in this manner, decreasing at the ends with 12 sts in the middle. When only the middle sts remain, divide the sts onto two needles, 6 sts each. K6. You are now between needles IV and I.
Using needle I pick up 17 sts from the left end of the heel flap + 1 st from between the needles. Using needle IV pick up 17 sts from the other end of the flap + 1 st from between the needles. 84 sts now on the needles.
Work the 84 st pattern on row 133 of chart II. Make sure to maintain gauge throughout. Work rows 134–148. At the same time work decreases on even rows of the chart = 68 sts.
Redistribute the sts, 17 sts per needle.
Work the 68 st pattern on row 149 of chart II. Work rows 150–180 of the chart.
Break off Mugwort. Work stockinette st using Off White for the rest of the piece.
After 1 round or when the sock covers your fifth toe, begin toe decreases: at the end of needles I and III, k2tog, k1; at the beginning of needles II and IV, k1, skp. Decrease as established on every 2nd round until 24 sts remain (6 per needle).
Knit the sts on needle I. Distribute the sts onto two needles, 12 sts instep + 12 sts sole. Graft the sts together: align the needles with the right sides facing each other and the working yarn coming from the sole. Insert the needle and yarn purlwise in the st on the front needle and then knitwise in the st on the back needle. Pull tightly.
1. Insert the needle knitwise through the st on the front needle (same st as before), slip the st.
2. Insert the needle purlwise through the next st on the front needle. Draw the yarn through, leaving the st on the needle.
3. Insert the needle purlwise through the st on the back needle (same st as before), slip the st.
4. Insert the needle knitwise through the next st on the back needle. Draw the yarn through, leaving the st on the needle.
Keep repeating 1–4 until 1 st remains. Insert the needle and yarn through the st to the WS and weave in the end.
Knit the other sock in the same manner.
Finishing
Weave in all ends. Lightly steam the socks.
