Stitch pattern

Rib:

Row 1:*K1,P1, rep from* to end.

Row 2: *K1, P1, rep from * to end.

Stocking stitch: knit on RS, purl on WS.

Rib in round: *K1,P1,rep from* to end.

Pattern on front is worked in stocking st using intarsia method.

Intarsia method: Each block of color has its own yarn ball (or a small amount of yarn is wound onto a bobbin). The yarns are twisted at each color change, with the new color coming over the old, to make a smooth join without leaving any holes.

Tension

19 sts and 26 rows to 10 cm measured over stocking st

Front

Using white yarn and smaller needles cast on 82[90:98:106] sts. Work in rib 6 cm. Change to larger needles. Beg and ending rows as indicated, cont in patt from chart as folls:

Row 9[7:3:1]: Start working from an arrow marked for your size, work in patt until the end of the row. Work rows 9[7:3:1] - 161[163:165:167].

Dec 1 st at both ends on rows 25, 39, 53, 63 = 74[82:90:98] sts.

Inc 1 st at both ends on rows 79 and 98 = 78[86:94:102] sts.

When you have completed row 112 shape armholes.

Shape Armholes

Keeping patt correct cast off 4[4:5:5] sts at beg of next 2 rows, 3 sts at beg of next 0[0:0:2] rows, 2 sts at the beg of next 2[4:4:4] rows. Dec 1 st at each end of foll alt rows 2(2)2(1) times =62[66:72:76] sts.

When you have completed row 134[136:138:140] shape front neck.

Shape Front Neck

Put 16 sts in the middle of front for neck on a holder. Work each side of neck separately. Cast off at next edge every alt row 3 sts once, 2 sts twice. Dec 1 st at neck edge every alt row twice. When you have completed row 161[163:165:167] cast off rem 14[16:19:21] sts. Rejoin yarn to sts on holder (left end) and work to end. Complete to match first side, reversing shapings.

Back

Work as front using white yarn throughout. When you have completed row 156[158:160:162] shape back neck.

Shape Back Neck

Cast off 30 sts in the middle of back for neck and work to end. Leave right side sts on a holder. Work each side of neck separately. Work 2 rows. Dec 2sts at neck edge. When you have completed row 161[163:165:167] cast off rem 14[16:19:21] sts. Rejoin yarn to sts on holder and patt to end. Complete to match first side, reversing shapings.

Sleeves

Using white yarn and smaller needles cast on 42[44:44:46] sts. Work in rib 6 cm. Change to larger needles. Cont in stocking st.

Work until sleeve meas 8[9:8:11] cm. Inc 1 st at each end. Repeat increases in 4,5[4:3,5:3] cm intervals 7(8)10(11) times = 58[62:66:70] sts.

Work until sleeve meas 44[45:46:47] cm.

Shape top

Cast off 4[4:5:5] sts at beg of next 2 rows. Cast off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at each end of next and every foll alt row 11(12)13(14) times. Cast off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Cast off rem sts.

Making Up

Flatten the pieces to the desired dimensions on an even surface, wrong side up. Wet with water spray, and allow to dry. Join both shoulder seams.

Collar

Using 40cm circular needle rejoin yarn to 16 sts on a holder, pick up and knit 80[80:84:84] sts evenly from neck edge =96[96:100:100] sts. Work in rib in round 20 cm. Cast off sts in rib.

Join side seams and sleeve seams using back stitch or matress stitch if preferred. Set in sleeves.
