1

Leg

Cast on 68(80) sts and divide them over four double-pointed needles, 17(20) sts on each. Join to work in the round: work 30(38) sts in 2x2 rib (beginning and ending with k2), 7(9) sts in reverse stockinette stitch, 24 sts in lattice cable and 7(9) sts in reverse stockinette stitch. Continue working the sts in this order.

2

When the leg measures 8(10) cm / 3.25(4)", p2tog at the edge of each reverse stockinette stripe. Repeat these decreases 4(6) more times every 5 cm / 2" = 58(66) sts. When the leg measures 28(40) cm / 11(15.75)", decrease 10(12) sts evenly across the rib sts = 48(54) sts.

3

Heel Flap

Place the rib sts (= 20(26) sts) on one needle and leave the remaining sts on hold. Turn and purl across. Turn, *sl 1 with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *–*. Turn and purl across. Turn, *k1, sl 1 with yarn in back*, repeat *–*. Repeat these 4 rows until the heel flap has 20(26) rows.

4

Heel Turn

Continue in the same reinforced pattern and turn the heel as follows:
Row 1 (RS): work 13(17) sts, sl 1, k1, psso.
Row 2: turn, sl 1, p6(8), p2tog.
Row 3: turn, sl 1, work 6(8) sts, sl 1, k1, psso.
Repeat rows 2–3 until all side sts have been worked and you have just finished a RS row = 8(10) sts.

5

Gusset and Foot

Pick up and knit 10(13) sts along the left edge of the heel flap, work the 28 instep sts, pick up and knit 10(13) sts along the other edge of the heel flap and knit the 8(10) heel sts = 56(64) sts.

6

Continue the lattice cable on the instep sts with 2 sts in reverse stockinette stitch on each side, and work the remaining sts in stockinette stitch. At the same time, decrease for the gussets: on one side, k2tog the last 2 stockinette sts before the purl sts, and on the other side, sl 1, k1, psso after the purl sts. Decrease first 1(2) times every round and then 2 times every other round. When 22(28) stockinette sts remain (50(56) sts in total), continue in pattern without decreasing.

7

Toe

When the foot covers the little toe, begin the toe decreases.
Round 1: work until 2(4) stockinette sts remain before the purl sts, k2tog, k2, sl 1, k1, psso. Work until 2(0) cable sts remain before the purl sts, k2tog, k2, sl 1, k1, psso, and work to end of round.
Round 2: knit the knit sts and purl the purl sts; there are now 4 knit sts on each side.
Round 3: work until 1 st remains before the 4 knit sts, k2tog, k2, sl 1, k1, psso, and work the same decreases on the other side.
Repeat these decreases every other round 2(4) more times, then every round. On the last two cable crossings, knit the sts held on the cable needle in back together. When 8(10) sts remain, cut the yarn, draw it through the remaining sts, pull tight and fasten off securely.
Work the second sock the same way.
