Work until mitt meas about 24 cm.
Thumb Opening
Work 24 sts, put 24 sts on a holder for thumb opening, cast on 24 sts (distribute these sts over 2 needles, 12 sts on each) = 48 sts. Cont in stocking st. Work 20 cm after thumb opening.
Shape Tip
K2tog at the end of each needle until you have 6 sts left. Break yarn leaving a long end. Pull end through all sts and tighten it. Weave in all ends.
Thumb
Rejoin yarn to 24 sts on a holder and knit them. Pick up 1 st at the side (to prevent forming a hole), 24 sts from hand edge (=back of the thumb), pick up 1 st at the side (to prevent forming a hole) =52 sts. Distribute sts evenly over 4 needles (13 sts on each needle). Work in stocking st 1 rnd.
Dec Rnd: Needle I. : K1, sl1, K1, psso, work to end of needle I.
Needle II. : work until you have 3 sts left on needle II., K2tog, K1.
Needle III.: K1, sl1, K1, psso, work to end of needle I.
Needle IV: work until you have 3 sts left on needle IV., K2tog, K1.
Rep dec rnd every 4th rnd 3 times and every alt rnd until you have 12 sts left. Break yarn leaving a long end. Pull end through all sts and tighten it. Weave in all ends.
To Make Up
Felt mitts in a washing machine. Use standard 40°C washing programme and laundry detergent. Add to the machine small amount of some other laundry such as 2 towels. Don't overfill the machine. Various machines felt wool differently. Put transparent plastic bag into the mitts before you felt them. This stops mitts getting felted together from the inside. Shape mitts to the desired dimensions after washing by strongly pulling and brushing them into shape. If mitts turned out too big, you can repeat the felting process.
