Christmas Sock KAL '25: Sydäntalvi Knee-high Socks
Join us for the season's most hearty Knit-along! Our sock designer Grandmasters Minna Metsänen and Sisko Sälpäkivi have hidden colourwork hearts all over these beautiful Christmas socks. The Sydäntalvi (Heart of Winter) socks are available in three different lengths and sizes - choose our suggested colour combinations or pick your own favourites!The Knit-along is published in six parts, starting Friday, November 21st. Stitch patterns Ribbing in the round: *k2, p2*, repeat *–*.Stockinette stitch in the round: knit all rounds.Colourwork in the round: work stockinette st following the chart and instructions.Twist the yarns around each other on the WS to avoid long floats(at different points on back-to-back rows).Always take the contrasting colour from under the main colour. This will make the contrasting colour the dominant colour and you’ll get a neat result.
Gauge 23 sts in colourwork = 10 cm / 4 in
Construction The socks are knitted from cuff to toe.
Part 1
Using Cranberry, cast on 84 sts and divide the sts across four needles, 21 sts each.The beginning of round is between needles I and IV, at the centre back.Join for working in the round. Work ribbing in the round for 12 cm / 4.75 in (the cuff is worn folded).Knit 2 more rounds using Cranberry.
Part 2
Begin the colourwork pattern on row 1 of chart I. Work the 84 st pattern.Work rows 2–21 of the chart.Work row 22 and decrease 1 st at the end of needle IV = 83 sts.Work row 23.
Part 3
Continue on row 24 of chart I.Work rows 25–54; on rows 26, 32, 38, 43, 48 and 53, decrease 2 sts as shown: at the beginning of round, skp (= slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass the slipped st over); at the end of round, k2tog.71 sts on the needles after the decreases.Redistribute the sts:21 sts, 15 sts, 15 sts, 20 sts.
Part 4
Continue on row 55 of chart I.Work rows 56–76; on rows 58, 62, 66, 70 and 74, decrease 2 sts as established following the chart.On row 76, decrease 4 sts as shown. 57 sts on the needles after the decreases.15 sts on needle I, 14 sts on all other needles.
Part 5
Begin heel flap: slip the sts of needle I onto needle IV = 29 sts. Leave the other sts on hold.Join Spruce Forest. Purl the WS row, decreasing 2 sts = 27 sts.
Turn work and begin reinforced stitch pattern:
Row 1 (RS): *slip 1 with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *–* to last st, k1.Turn work.
Row 2 (WS):slip 1 with yarn in back, purl to end.Turn work.
Repeat rows 1–2 a total of 12 times.25 rows in total in the heel flap.
Begin turning the heel. Continue the reinforced pattern as established.Work the RS row until 9 sts remain.Skp (= slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass slipped st over), turn work.Slip 1, p9, p2tog, turn work.Slip 1, work to last 8 sts, skp.Continue in this manner, decreasing at the ends with 11 sts in the centre.When only the centre sts remain, distribute the heel flap sts onto two needles, 6 sts on needle I and 5 sts on needle IV. Begin the colourwork pattern on row 1 of chart II. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop.Decrease 1 st on needle II following the chart.Work rows 2–16 of the chart. Work gusset decreases following the chart.54 sts on the needles after the decreases:14 sts on needles I and II, 13 sts on needles III and IV.
Part 6
Continue on row 17 of chart II.Work rows 18–39; on the last round, decrease 1 st on needles I and III: k1, skp, knit to end of needle.13 sts on all needles.The foot now measures approx. 20 cm / 7.75 in.Note:If needed, begin the toe decreases during the colourwork section.If you need the foot section to be longer, work more rounds using Cranberry before starting the toe decreases.
Using Cranberry, begin the toe decreases: at the end of needles I and III, k2tog, k1;at the beginning of needles II and IV, k1, skp.Repeat the decreases on every other round until 32 sts remain on each needle.Repeat the decreases on every round until 8 sts remain.
Break yarn, pull it through the sts and securely weave in.
Knit the other sock in the same manner.
Finishing
Steam the socks lightly. Fold the cuff.
