Rytmikäs Socks Example 1

Rytmikäs Socks

Designed by Minna Metsänen and knitted from Novita Nalle, these super popular socks feature a simple colourwork pattern. The pattern is easy enough even if you’re a complete beginner when it comes to colourwork knits. You’ll be sure to knit “just one more stripe” again and again!

Stitch patterns Ribbing in the round: *k2, p2*, repeat *–*.Stockinette stitch in the round: knit all rounds.Colourwork in the round: work stockinette st following the chart.

Gauge 24 sts in stockinette st = 10 cm / 4 in

1

Using the Linen yarn, cast on 48(56)64 sts and divide them onto four needles, 12(14)16 sts each. The beginning of round is between needles I and IV.Work ribbing in the round for 2(3)3 cm / 0.75(1.25)1.25 in.

2

Begin the colourwork pattern on row 1 of the chart. Keep repeating the 2-st pattern to end of round.Work rows 2–25 of the chart, then keep repeating rows 1–25.Work as established until you have completed 8(10)11 stripes. The leg now measures approx. 15(18)20 cm / 6(7)7.75 in.Break yarns.

3

Begin the heel flap: place the sts of needle I onto needle IV [= 24(28)32 sts].Leave the other sts on hold.Turn work and begin reinforced st pattern using Linen:

Row 1:slip 1, purl to end.Turn work.

Row 2:*slip 1, k1*, repeat *–* 11(13)15 more times.Turn work.

Repeat rows 1–2 a total of 12(14)16 times [= 24(28)32 rows].

4

Work the WS row once more and begin turning the heel. Continue the reinforced pattern as established.Work RS row until 9(10)11 sts remain.Skp (= slip 1 knitwise, knit 1, pass the slipped st over), turn work.Slip 1, p6(8)10, p2tog, turn work.Slip 1, work to last 8(9)10 sts, skp.Continue in this manner, decreasing at the ends with 8(10)12 sts in the centre. When only the centre sts remain, divide the sts onto two needles,4(5)6 sts each.Knit the 4(5)6 sts of needle IV.

5

Pick up sts onto needle I: 12(14)16 sts from the left end of the heel flap + 2 sts from between the needles.Knit the 4(5)6 heel flap sts and knit the picked-up sts through the back loop.Needles II and III: knit all sts.Pick up 12(14)16 sts from the right end of the flap + 2 sts from between the needles. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop, knit the 4(5)6 heel flap sts onto needle IV.

6

With these 60(70)80 sts, keep working the colourwork pattern and begin gusset decreases: at the end of needle I, k2tog; at the beginning of needle IV, skp.

Note:On needle I, begin the colourwork with the background colour as established. This way the pattern will not break except at the gusset decreases. On needles II and III, also begin with the background colour. On needle IV, the first colour depends on the number of sts, while the last st is always knitted using the contrasting colour.Repeat the decreases on every 3rd round until 12(14)16 sts remain on all needles.

7

Work colourwork until the sole measures 15(19)25 cm / 6(7.5)9.75 in or until the sock covers your fifth toe.Complete the last stripe, then begin toe decreases (while working the stripe if necessary).Use Linen for the rest of the sock.

8

Wedge toe:At the end of needles I and III, k2tog, k1; at the beginning of needles II and IV, k1, skp.Repeat the decreases on every other round until 5(6)7 sts remain on all needles. Then work the decreases on every round. When 8 sts remain, break yarn, pull it through the sts, tighten and weave in.

Knit the other sock in the same manner.
