Elämän virta Knee-high Socks
These knee socks are a gorgeous addition to your late winter wardrobe! Designed by Sisko Sälpäkivi and knitted from the classic Novita 7 Veljestä yarn, the Elämän virta socks feature a beautiful cable pattern which really comes into its own when the socks are as long as these are. The calf decreases blend neatly with the ribbing.

Construction The socks are knitted from cuff to toe.
Cast on 80 sts and divide them onto four needles, 20 sts each.The beginning of round is between needles I and IV.
Begin the rib pattern on row 1 of the chart. Work the 80 st pattern.Repeat row 1 a total of 12 times.
Begin the cable pattern on row 2 of chart I. Work the 80 st pattern.Then keep repeating rows 3–26 of the chart.
Note:After working rows 2–26 once, slip 5 sts from needle I to needle IV and 5 sts from needle II to needle III.The beginning of round moved 5 sts forward, next to the cable. 15 sts on needles I and II, 25 sts on needles III and IV.
Begin the calf decreases on row 3 of chart II:2 sts decreased:1 st on needle III, 1 st on needle IV.Work rows 4–26.5 sts decreased on needles III and IV.68 sts on the needles:15 sts on needles I and II, 19 sts on needles III and IV.
Keep repeating rows 3–26 of chart II, decreasing as established 6 more times on every 4th row.56 sts on the needles:15 sts on needles I and II, 13 sts on needles III and IV.
Keep working the cable pattern until the leg measures approx. 34 cm / 13.5 in. Finish after row 8 of chart II.On needles I and II, work next row of cable pattern; knit across needles III and IV.Make a note of the row you last worked.Turn work.
Begin heel flap: (WS) purl the sts of needle III and IV onto the same needle (= 26 sts).Leave the other sts on hold.Turn work and begin reinforced stitch pattern:
Row 1 (RS):*slip 1 with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *–* until 1 st remains, k1. Turn work.
Row 2 (WS): slip 1 with yarn in back, purl to end.Turn work.
Repeat rows 1–2 a total of 13 times = 26 rows.
Begin turning the heel. Continue the reinforced pattern as established.Work the RS row until 9 sts remain.Skp (= slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass slipped st over), turn work.Slip 1, p8, p2tog, turn work.Slip 1, work to last 8 sts, skp.Continue as established, decreasing at the ends with 10 sts in the centre. When only the centre sts remain, divide the heel flap sts onto two needles, 5 sts each.Knit the 5 sts on the right. The beginning of round is now here, at the sole.
Pick up sts onto needle I (with 5 sts): 13 sts from the left end of the heel flap + 1 st from between the flap and needle II.Knit the 5 heel flap sts and knit the picked-up sts through the back loop.On needles II and III, work the cable pattern.Using the needle with 5 sts, pick up 13 sts from the right end + 1 st from between needle III and the heel flap. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop and k5.68 sts in total.
Work cable pattern on needles II and III (instep) and stockinette st on needles I and IV (sole).
On the first round, begin gusset decreases: at the end of needle I, k2tog; at the beginning of needle IV, skp.Repeat the decreases on every other round until 13 sts remain on needles I and IV. 15 sts remain on needles II and III.
When the sole measures 20 cm / 7.75 in or when the sock covers the fifth toe, redistribute the sts so that there are 14 sts on all needles.
Begin toe decreases: at the end of needles I and III, k2tog, k1; at the beginning of needles II and IV, k1, skp.Repeat the decreases on every other round until 24 sts remain (6 sts on each needle).Repeat the decreases on every round until 8 sts remain (2 sts on each needle).
Break yarn, pull it through the sts, tighten and weave in.
Knit the other sock in the same manner.
