- Textured pattern in the round:
Round 1: *k2, p2*
Left mitten
Cast on 36(44)52 sts and divide them onto four needles, 9(11)13 sts each. The beginning of round is between needles I and IV. Work ribbing in the round for 10(12)13 cm, then begin working the textured pattern.
Note: After working 2 rounds of the textured pattern, begin increases for the thumb gusset: on the next round work until 4 sts remain on needle II. Increase 1 st (= using the left-hand needle pick up the strand of yarn between the sts and knit it through the back loop), k2, increase, k2. Continue following the textured pattern but work the gusset sts in stockinette st. Repeat the increases on every 3rd round 4(6)7 more times. 2 sts increased each time.
After the increases, work 1 round and then the next round until you reach the gusset. Leave the 12(16)18 gusset sts on hold.
Cast on 2 sts at the gusset. Work following the textured pattern until the piece measures approx. 11(15)16 cm from the cuff or when the mitten covers your index finger.
Top decreases: at the beginning of needles I and III, k1, skp (= slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass slipped st over), and at the end of needles II and IV, k2tog, k1. Work the decreases on every round until 8 sts remain.
Break yarn, pull it through the sts and securely weave in.
Right mitten
Mirror left mitten. Begin the ribbing with p2 and work the thumb gusset 2 sts from the beginning of needle III.
Thumb
Place the held sts onto the needles and pick up 2 additional sts from the base of the thumb. Divide the 14(18)20 sts onto three needles and work stockinette st in the round.
When you have worked for 3,5(5)5,5 cm or when the mitten covers half your thumbnail, work the top decrease: k2tog at the end of each needle until 4 sts remain.
Then k1 and pass the other sts over from left to right. Break yarn and securely weave in.
Knit the other thumb in the same manner.
Finishing
Steam the mittens lightly.
