- Ribbing in the round: *k1, p1*
Left mitten
Using main colour and the smaller needles cast on 36(40)44 sts and divide them onto four needles, 9(10)11 sts each. The beginning of round is between needles I and IV. Work ribbing in the round as follows: 3 rounds main colour, 2 rounds contrasting colour, 2 rounds main colour, 2 rounds contrasting colour. Then work using main colour until the ribbing measures 7(8)9 cm. Knit 1 round, increasing 1 st on each needle (knit the strand of yarn between the sts through the back loop). 40(44)48 sts on the needles.
Switch to the larger needles and begin the colourwork pattern on row 1 of chart I(II)III. Work rows 2-13(15)16) of the chart.
Continue on row 14(16)17 as follows: work the 10(11)12 sts on needle I, work the first 8(9)10 sts on needle II (marked in red) using a different-coloured yarn (= thumb opening). Move the 8(9)10 sts back to the left-hand needle and work to end of round following the chart.
Children's size: Work rows 15-45. On row 37, 1 st decreased on needles II and IV. On rows 38-45, 1 st decreased on each needle.
Women's size: Work rows 17-51. On row 42, 1 st decreased on needles II and IV. On rows 43-51, 1 st decreased on each needle.
Men's size: Work rows 18-54. On row 44, 1 st decreased on needles I and III. On rows 45-54, 1 st decreased on each needle.
Break the yarn and pull it through the sts. Securely weave in.
Right mitten
Mirror left mitten and work the thumb hole on needle III.
Thumb
Remove the different-coloured yarn. Using the larger needles pick up the sts from the top and bottom edges of the thumb hole. Pick up additional sts from both sides for 19(21)23 sts in total. Distribute these onto three needles. Resume the colourwork established on needle II. On the first round decrease 2 sts = 17(19)21 sts.
When you have worked for 4,5(5)5,5 cm or when the mitten covers half your thumbnail, work the top decrease: k2tog at the end of each needle until 4(3)5 sts remain. Then k1 and pass the other sts over from left to right. Securely weave in.
Finishing
Steam the mittens lightly.
