Pouta Granny Square Shorts

The trendiest outfit of the summer is made from crocheted squares!
You can make these shorts using traditional granny squares, flat flower motifs, raised flower motifs – or by combining different types of squares together! See detailed instructions for the squares here.

Gauge Granny square (whole piece) approx. 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4”

Notes If you use different granny square designs in one project, you may need to use different hook size for different squares to ensure the pieces are the same size. Please note that yarn consumption varies depending on the yarn used and the granny square design chosen.

Granny squares

For the shorts, you can use any of the three granny squares: simple, flat flower of raised flower. Make 36(58)68 whole squares and 4(4)4 triangles according to the pattern of your choice.

In the samples, the granny squares were crocheted in the following color order:

Flat flower granny square shorts

Rounds/rows 1–2: (020) soprano, round/row 3: (167) lento, rounds/rows 4–5: (178) aaria.

Simple granny square shorts

Assembly

Assemble the pieces of one leg according to the layout diagram. If you made the pieces with two different color combinations (simple granny square shorts), the numbers show the order of the pieces. Sew the seams through the back loop using whipstitch. Assemble the second leg in the same way.

Fold the leg pieces in half and sew the inside seams of the legs (shown in red in the diagram) through the back loop of sts using whipstitch. Place one leg inside the other, wrong sides together, and sew the crotch seam (shown in blue in the diagram) through the back loop of sts using whipstitch.

Rounds 3–4: Ch3 (= 1st dc), work 1 dc in each dc and chain space. Join with sl st in 3rd ch from beg of round.
