Novita Nalle Alpakka: Hetki Yoga Socks
Using the cable pattern of the Hetki cardigan, Päivi Tissari created these beautiful yoga socks that are all about well-being. Construction These yoga socks are worked from the cuff down. The socks feature an open heel and toe.
Using smaller double-pointed needles, cast on 78 sts and divide the sts onto four needles: Needle 1: 19 sts, needle 2: 20 sts, needle 3: 19 sts and needle 4: 20 sts. Needle 1 marks the beginning of round. Work in rib stitch for 4 cm / 1.5”. Knit 1 round and at the same time evenly increase 6 sts = 84 sts.
Switch to larger needles. Redistribute the sts: needle 1: 16 sts, needle 2: 23 sts, needle 3: 18 sts and needle 4: 27 sts. Needle 1 marks the beginning of round. Begin cable pattern by working round 1 of chart (there are 39 sts at front and 45 sts at back of the sock).
Work charted rounds 2–20. 4 sts decreased on round 20, you have 80 sts: 16 sts on needle 1, 23 sts on needle 2, 16 sts on needle 3 and 25 sts on needle 4.
Work charted rounds 21–26. 2 sts decreased on round 26, you have 78 sts: 16 sts on needle 1, 23 sts on needle 2, 16 sts on needle 3 and 23 sts on needle 4.
Repeat charted rounds 27–38.
When the leg measures 15 cm / 6” from the cast-on edge, work p2tog at each 5-stitch purl stripe: 6 sts decreased, you have 72 sts. Repeat the decreases every 6 cm / 2.25” 2 more times. You have 60 sts. Work 1 round and redistribute the sts: *p1, work the 8-st cable, p1*, repeat *–* twice (= front: 11 sts for needle 1, 19 sts for needle 2), * p1, work the 8-st cable, p1*, repeat *–* twice (= back: 11 sts for needle 3, 19 sts for needle 4).
When the leg measures approx. 33 cm / 13” from the cast-on edge and you have worked 1 round after a cable-cross round, continue working the cable pattern at front and start working the rib stitch at back: Work needles 1 and 2 in cable patten. Work needles 3 and 4 as follows: *k1, p1*, repeat *–* to last 2 sts, k2tog. 1 st decreased on needle 4, you have 59 sts.
When the rib section at back measures 3 cm / 1.25”, work the heel opening: Work the next round until the beginning of needle 3. K1, p1, bind off 9 sts from needle 3, bind off 16 sts from needle 4 (you now have 1 st on right needle), k1.
Next round: Work the sts on needles 1 and 2. K1, p1, cast on 10 sts on needle 3, cast on 11 more sts on needle 4, p1, k1. You have 55 sts: 30 sts for the instep (front), 25 sts for the sole.
Continue working in cable pattern with needles 1 and 2 and in rib stitch with needles 3 and 4.
When the rib measures 3 cm / 1.25”, after the heel opening, switch to stockinette stitch with needles 3 and 4.
When the foot measures approx. 6 cm / 2.25” after the heel opening and you have last worked a cable-cross round, work 1 more round and at the same time work k2tog at each cable and p2tog at both purl sections between the cables. 5 sts decreased, you have 50 sts. Work 3 cm / 1.25” in stockinette stitch. Bind off all sts.
Work the second sock in the same way.
Finishing
Lightly steam the socks.
