Needles 8.0 mm (US 11) double pointed needles for the ribbing and 10.0 mm (US 15) double pointed needles for the main part

Stitch patterns: 2x2 ribbing in the round: *k2, p2*
Using the smaller needles, cast on 44(48)52 sts using either the Long-tail cast on method or the Backward loop cast on method. Divide stitches evenly on four needles: 11(12)13 sts on each needle. The beginning of the round is between needles I and IV. Join in the round careful not to twist the ring od stitches. Work 2x2 ribbing in the round as instructed above in the Stitch patterns. Continue until the piece measures 5 cm / 2 inches from the cast on edge.
Change to larger needles and work Stockinette stitch in the round, until the piece measures 15(18)19 cm / 6(7)7.5 inches from the cast on edge.
Start shaping the top of the hat with decreases:
Decrease Round 1: *Ssk, k6(7)8, k2tog, k1*, repeat *-* three more times. 8 sts decreased, 36(40)44 sts remain, 9(10)11 sts on each needle.
Decrease Round 2: K all.
Decrease Round 3: *Ssk, k4(5)6, k2tog, k1*, repeat *-* three more times. 8 sts decreased, 28(32)36 sts remain, 7(8)9 sts on each needle.
Decrease Round 4: K all.
Decrease Round 5: *Ssk, k2(3)4 sts, k2tog, k1*, repeat *-* three more times. 8 sts decreased 20(24)28 sts remain, 5(6)7 sts on each needle.

Break the yarn and thread it through the remaining live stitches with a tapestry needle. Pull to close the gap at the top of the hat and secure tightly. Weave in all yarn ends on the inside of the work. Place the hat on top of a towel on a flat surface, then mist it gently with water. Let dry. Optional: Attach a pompom with a diameter of 7 cm / 2.75 inches on top of the hat.
