6

You have completed rows 1–4 of Chart I. Continue working the chart row by row, increasing at both ends on every row and working the increased sts in cable pattern according to the chart. When you reach the line for your size, you have worked an increase row 21(21)31(31)41(41)51(51) times in total. The last row is a RS row. You now have 83(83)103(103)123(123)143(143) sts. There are 2(2)3(3)4(4)5(5) cables on both shoulders and 2 edge sts at both ends.

7

Attach marker on the first and last st of last row (= shoulder edge). Continue from row 7.(7.)1.(1.)3.(3.)5.(5.) of Chart II for your size (WS row) as follows: work the 2 sts at the left edge, work the 20-st pattern 4(4)5(5)6(6)7(7) times, work the last st at the right edge. Work as established until you have worked the 8-row pattern repeat 6(6)7(7)9(9)10(10) times at the centre of the piece, counting from neck edge, finishing with row 8 of Chart II. The next row is a WS row.

8

Sizes XS/S(L)XXL(4XL): Work 10 more rows in pattern. The last row is a RS row.

Sizes M(XL)3XL(5XL): Work 1 row (WS), then begin armhole increases as follows: p1, m1r, work in pattern to last st, m1l, p1. Repeat the increases every 2nd row 4 more times, finishing with a RS row. 10 sts increased.

You now have 83(93)103(113)123(133)143(153) sts. Cut yarn and place the sts on hold.

9

Upper right front

With RS facing and using your larger needles, pick up and k sts for right front along the right shoulder of back piece (slanted edge). Beginning at the marker and ending at neck edge, pick up each st in the second st next to the outermost st. The outermost st column forms a seam allowance on the WS of the work. Pick up a total of 23(23)33(33)43(43)53(53) sts.

10

Begin the cable pattern on row 1 (WS) of Chart III for your size as follows: work the leftmost 11 sts, PM, work to the mark for your size, then work the edge st at the right edge. Work rows 2–3 as established. On row 4, increasefor the neck: work to marker, m1r, SM, work 11 sts. Continue working according to the chart, repeating the increase every 4th row 4 more times, then every 2nd row 15 times = 43(43)53(53)63(63)73(73) sts. Note: Work the increased sts in cable pattern according to the chart. Work to end of Chart III.

11

Continue in cable pattern as established until you have worked the 8-row pattern repeat 8(8)9(9)10(10)11(11) times in total counting from the picked-up sts at shoulder. Finish with row 8 of pattern. The next row is a WS row. Note: The front piece is considerably longer than the back piece at the armhole edge.

Sizes XS/S(L)XXL(4XL): Work 10 more rows in cable pattern. The last row is a RS row.

Sizes M(XL)3XL(5XL): Work 1 row (WS), then begin armhole increases as follows: p1, m1r, work to end. Repeat the increase every 2nd row 4 more times, finishing with a RS row. 5 sts increased.

You now have 43(48)53(58)63(68)73(78) sts for right front. Do not cut yarn.

12

Upper left front

Join a new ball of yarn. With RS facing and using your larger needles, pick up and k sts for left front along the left shoulder of back piece (slanted edge). Beginning at neck edge and ending at the marker, pick up each st in the second st next to the outermost st. The outermost st column forms a seam allowance on the WS of the work. Pick up a total of 23(23)33(33)43(43)53(53) sts.

13

Begin the cable pattern on row 1 (WS) of Chart IV for your size as follows: Work the edge st at the left edge, beginning at the mark for your size, work to last 11 sts, PM, work the last 11 sts. Work rows 2–3 as established. On row 4, increasefor the neck: work 11 sts, SM, m1l, work to end. Continue working according to the chart, repeating the increase every 4th row 4 more times, then every 2nd row 15 times = 43(43)53(53)63(63)73(73) sts. Note: Work the increased sts in cable pattern according to the chart. Work to end of Chart IV.

14

Continue in cable pattern as established until you have worked the 8-row pattern repeat 8(8)9(9)10(10)11(11) times in total counting from the picked-up sts at shoulder. Finish with row 8 of pattern. The next row is a WS row. Note: The front piece is considerably longer than the back piece at the armhole edge.

15

Sizes XS/S(L)XXL(4XL): Work 10 more rows in cable pattern. The last row is a RS row.

Sizes M(XL)3XL(5XL): Work 1 row (WS), then begin armhole increases as follows: work to last st, m1l, p1. Repeat the increase every 2nd row 4 more times, finishing with RS row. 5 sts increased.

You now have 43(48)53(58)63(68)73(78) sts for left front. Cut yarn.

16

Body

Check that you have finished the back and two fronts with the same row of pattern. Join the pieces on the same circular needles. Beginning with a WS row, work the 43(48)53(58)63(68)73(78) sts of right front, CO 7 sts for underarm, work the 83(93)103(113)123(133)143(153) sts of the back, CO 7 sts for second underarm and work the 43(48)53(58)63(68)73(78) sts of left front. You have 183(203)223(243)263(283)303(323) sts on the needles for the body. The 20-st pattern is repeated 9(10)11(12)13(14)15(16) times per row.

17

Work in cable pattern as established until the body measures 26(27)26(27)26(27)26(27) cm from underarm or 1 cm / 0.5" less than the desired final length.

18

On the next RS row, decrease 2 sts at each cable as follows: k2, *k2tog, k3*, repeat *–* to end = 147(163)179(195)211(227)243(259) sts.

Work in stockinette stitch for 1 cm / 0.5". Bind off knitwise on a RS row.

19

Sleeves

Using your larger 40 cm / 16" circular needles, pick up and k sts for the sleeve around the armhole. First, divide the armhole into four equal sections using stitch markers. You should pick up an (approx.) equal number of sts from each section. Beginning at the centre of the underarm cast-on, pick up and knit a total of 90(90)90(90)100(100)110(110) sts (approx. 2 sts per 3 rows or 3 sts per 4 rows). K 10 sts. Place the beginning-of-round marker here. Note: The marker is not at the centre of the underarm but 10 sts to the left.

20

Begin working the cable pattern in the round on row 1 of Chart V for your size.

Sizes XXL(3XL): Repeat the 20-st pattern 5(5) times per round.

Sizes XS/S(M)L(XL)4XL(5XL): Work the 10 sts at the right edge, then repeat the 20-st pattern 4(4)4(4)5(5) times to end of round. Note: The first and last cable of the round twist in the same direction.

All sizes: Work charted rounds 2–8, then work rounds 1–8 once more.

21

Continue to work in pattern and begin sleeve decreases: work the next round (round 1 of Chart V), to last 20 sts, PM. Work the decreases with the armhole sts (= between the markers) according to Chart VI and the written instructions for your size. Work the rest of the sts in pattern according to Chart V.

22

Sizes XS/S(M)L(XL)XXL(3XL): Work rows 1–17 of Chart VI. One cable decreased = 80(80)80(80)90(90) sts.

Sizes 4XL(5XL): Work rows 1–24 of Chart VI. On the next round, purl the last 2 underarm sts together. Two cables decreased = 90(90) sts.

23

Continue to work in pattern. Note: In sizes XXL(3XL)4XL(5XL), the first and last cable of the round twist in the same direction.

When the sleeve measures 46(46)47(47)48(48)49(49) cm / 18 (18)18.5(18.5)18.75(18.75)19.25(19.25)" from underarm or is 1 cm / 0.5"shorter than desired final length, decrease 3 sts at each cable as follows: *k2tog, k1, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k2*, rep *–* to end = 56(56)56(56)63(63)63(63) sts.

24

K1 round. Bind off knitwise.

Work the second sleeve in the same way.

25

Button band

With RS facing and using your smaller circular needles, pick up and k sts along the front edges and neck edge. Beginning at the bottom of right front, pick up and k 3 sts for every 4 rows.

26

Purl the next row (WS) and at the same time work buttonholes (= yo, p2tog) at right front edge. Make the first buttonhole at the bottom of neckline, the last one 3 cm / 1.25" above the bottom of hem, and the last 2 evenly spaced in between. After the buttonhole row, work 3 rows in stockinette stitch. Bind off knitwise (on WS).

27

Finishing

Weave in ends. Mist the garment carefully. Lay it flat to its measurements WS up. Steam lightly using a wool setting and leave to dry overnight. If necessary, steam the hem and cuffs once more to smooth and even them out.

Sew on buttons.
