Novita 7 Veljestä: Ihastuttavat woolly socks
Niina Laitinen, aka the Sock Queen, is inspired to create new patterns everywhere she goes. Her gorgeous lace, cable and colorwork socks have been hugely popular with knitters for many years. She is particularly fond of intricate cable patterns, and these Novita 7 Veljestä socks are another Niina Laitinen classic. They are as fun to knit as they are cozy to wear!

Gauge swatch Stockinette in the round: knit all rows. Cabling: as per chart and pattern instructions
Gauge 22 sts of stocking stitch = 10 cm (4 in)
Leg
Cast on 69 sts and divide onto four needles to work in the round: 22, 13, 12 and 22 sts. Beginning of round is between Needle 1 and Needle 4, at center back. Join to work in the round and work in pattern according to Row 1 of Chart A. Work Rows 2–93, making decreases as indicated. After the decreases have been worked, you will have 51 sts.
Redistribute sts before working the heel: 13, 13, 12 and 13 sts. If you would prefer a more generous fit around the ankle, skip the decreases on the last round and dec2 on Row 1 of the heel flap instead.
Heel
Start the heel flap by knitting the sts on Needle 1 onto Needle 4 = 26 sts. Leave the remaining sts for now. Turn your work, slip the first stitch purlwise (sl1pw) and purl the remaining stitches, decreasing 2 sts at regular intervals = 24 sts. Turn your work and continue in heel stitch:
Row 1 (WS): slip one st with yarn in back (sl1wyib), and purl remaining sts to end. Turn your work.
Round 2 (RS): *sl1wyib, k1*, repeat *–* to end. Turn your work.
Repeat Rows 1−2 12 times, then repeat Round 1 one more time = 25 rows.
Now work the heel decreases continuing in heel stitch as above. Continue to work the RS row until 9 sts remain. Now skp (sl1kw, k1, pass slipped st over) and turn your work. Sl1, p6, p2tog and turn work. Sl1, knit until 8 sts remain, skp. Continue to work these decreases from the sides, always keeping 8 sts in the middle of your work. When no more side sts remain, divide your heel sts between two needles, 4 sts on each. Knit the 4 sts on the right-hand needle. This is now the beginning of a new round.
Foot
Using Needle 1, pick up 14 sts from the left side of the heel flap. K4, then knit the 14 picked up sts tbl. Continue to work sts on Needle 2 and Needle 3 in pattern as set in Row 1 of Chart B. Now pick up 14 sts from the right side of the heel flap and ktbl, knit the 4 sts on Needle 4 onto the same needle. You now have a total of 61 sts.
Begin gusset decreases here: k2tog at start of Needle 1 and skp. Repeat these decreases every alternating row until you have 49 sts in total, (12, 13, 12 and 12). Continue to work sts on Needle 2 and Needle 3 in pattern, working Rows 2–45.
The socks have a wedge toe, worked with Needle 1 and Needle 4, as you continue to work the sts on Needle 2 and Needle in pattern as set in Chart C.
Needle 1: knit all sts until 3 sts remain, k2tog and k1.
Needle 2 and 3: continue in pattern as set in Row 1, Chart C. Work Rows 2–12.
Needle 4: k1, skp and knit to end.
Repeat these decreases on Needle 1 and Needle 4 on every alternating round until 9 sts remain on each needle. Now work the decreases on every round.
When 9 sts remain, break yarn, thread the tail through the remaining stitches and finish off.
Repeat to make second sock.
Finishing
