Stitch patterns Twisted ribbing in the round: *k1 through back loop, p1*, repeat *–*.Cable pattern: follow the chart and instructions.Stockinette stitch in the round: knit all rows.

Gauge 21 sts in stockinette st with smaller needles = 10 cm / 4 in

Using the smaller needles, cast on 56(60) sts and divide them onto four needles, 14(15) sts each. The beginning of round is between needles I and IV, at the side of the sock. Work twisted ribbing in the round for 3 cm.

Switch to the larger needles and begin the cable pattern on row 1 of chart I. Repeat the 28(30) st pattern two times. Work rows 2-16 of the chart, then work rows 1-16 twice more.

Switch to the smaller needles and begin the heel flap: knit the sts on needles I and II onto the same needle = 28(30) sts. Leave the other sts on hold. Turn work and begin the reinforced stitch pattern:

Row 1: (WS) slip 1 with yarn in back, purl to end. Turn work.

Row 2: (RS) *slip 1 with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *-* to end. Turn work.

Work rows 1-2 a total of 13(14) times [= 26(28) rows]. Work the WS row once more.

Begin French heel turn:

Row 1: (RS) slip 1 with yarn in back, k15(17), skp (= slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass the slipped st over), k1. Turn work.

Row 2: (WS) slip 1 with yarn in front, p5(7), p2tog, p1. Turn work.

Row 3: slip 1 with yarn in back, knit to last st before gap, skp, k1. Turn work.

Row 4: slip 1 with yarn in front, purl to last st before gap, p2tog, p1. Turn work.

Keep repeating rows 3-4 until there are 16(18) sts on the needles. Finish on the WS row. Divide the heel flap sts onto two needles, 8(9) sts each.

Using a free needle pick up and knit 13(14) sts from the left end of the heel flap + 1 st from between the flap and needle III. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop onto needle II [with 8(9) sts]. On needles III and IV, resume the cable pattern on row 1 of the chart. Using needle I [8(9) sts] pick up 13(14) sts from the right end + 1 st from between needle IV and the heel flap. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop. The beginning of round is still at the side of the sock.

On needles I and II work stockinette st; on needles III and IV, work cable pattern. Begin gusset decreases: at the beginning of needle I, skp; at the end of needle II, k2tog. Repeat the decreases every other round until 14(15) sts remain on each needle.

Work as established until the sole measures 20(22) cm or until the sock covers the fifth toe.

On needles III and IV, continue working the cable pattern for as long as you can and begin toe decreases: at thebeginning of needle I, k1, skp; at theend of needle II, k2tog, k1; at thebeginning of needle III, p1, skp; at the end of needle IV, k2tog, p1. Repeat the decreases on every other round until 6 sts remain on each needle.

Redistribute the sts onto two needles, with 12 sts each on instep and sole. Graft the sts together.

Knit the other sock in the same manner. Work the cable pattern following chart II.
