Knitting tension 19 sts and 26 rows in double seed stitch/moss stitch with the larger needles = 10 cm (4 in)
Pattern This knit is worked in one piece up to the armhole. From the armhole, the front and back sections are worked separately. The sleeves are worked from shoulder to cuff using picked up sts, with the sleeve cap shaped with short rows. There are two sleeve styles to choose from.
Front and back sections
This section is worked in one piece from bottom up to the armhole.
Using the Italian cast on method (or technique of your choice), cast on 224(240)256(264)280(296)312(320) sts using the smaller needles. Place stitch marker at beginning and center of round to mark the sides. The front and back sections have 112(120)128(132)140(148)156(160) sts each. Work in rib until the work measures 6 cm (2.5 in).
Switch to the larger needles and work in double seed stitch/moss stitch and cable from Row 1 of Chart 1: *work A−B with 20(24)28(30)34(38)42(44) sts, work B–C (18 + 2 sts), repeat C−D 6 times (36 + 12 sts), work D–E (18 + 2 sts) and repeat E−F with 20(24)28(30)34(38)42(44) sts*, repeat *−*. You have added 32 sts = 256(272)288(296)312(328)344(352) sts. The front and back sections now have 128(136)144(148)156(164)172(176) sts. Work chart row 2.
Work rows 3–4 in A−B and E−F, then repeat rows 1–4.
Repeat rows 3–14 in B−C and D−E.
Repeat rows 3–10 in C−D.
When the work measures 35(36)37(38)39(40)41(42) cm [13.75(14.25)14.5(15)15.5(15.75)16(16.5) in] (women’s sizing) and 45(46)47(48)49(50)51(52) cm [17.75(18)18.5(19)19.25(19.5)20(20.5) in] (men’s sizing) and you have finished an odd chart row, divide into two sections. Work the next round until 4(4)4(4)6(6)6(6) sts remain before the SM and bind off 8(8)8(8)12(12)12(12) sts for the armhole. Continue in pattern as established until 4(4)4(4)6(6)6(6) sts remain before BOR, bind off 4(4)4(4)6(6)6(6) sts at the end of round for the second armhole and a further 4(4)4(4)6(6)6(6) sts from the start of the next round. Work the 120(128)136(140)144(152)160(164) back section sts and leave the front section sts to one side.
Top back section
Continue to work the back section sts back and forth in pattern and bind off 1(1)2(2)2(2)3(3)x2 sts and 2x1 sts at both ends on every other row= 112(120)124(128)132(140)144(148) sts.
When the armhole measures 19(20)21(22)23(24)25(26) cm [7.5(7.75)8.25(8.5)9(9.5)9.75(10.25) in], bind off 44(44)44(48)48(48)52(52) sts in the middle for the neckline and work the left side of the neckline first. At the start of the WS row, bind off 10(11)12(12)12(14)14(14) shoulder sts. At the start of the RS row, bind off 2 neckline edge sts. Now bind off 10(11)12(12)13(14)14(15) sts at shoulder and 2 sts at neckline edge sts. Finally, bind off the remaining 10(12)12(12)13(14)14(15) shoulder sts.
Repeat as mirror image for the other side.
Top front section
Work as the back section until the armhole measures 14(15)16(17)18(19)20(21) cm [5.5(6)6.25(6.75)7(7.5)7.75(8.25) in].
Slip 22(22)22(26)26(26)30(30) sts in the middle onto a stitch holder or a length of scrap yarn for the neckline and work the left side first. Bind off 5 sts at the beginning of RS row. Continue to bind off 1x3 sts, 2x2 sts and 3x1 sts at the start of every RS row.
When the armhole measures 19(20)21(22)23(24)25(26) cm [7.5(7.75)8.25(8.75)9(9.5)9.75(10.25) in] bind off 10(11)12(12)12(14)14(14) shoulder sts at the start of WS row. Bind off a further 1x10(11)12(12)13(14)14(15) sts and 1x10(12)12(12)13(14)14(15) sts at the start of every WS row.
Repeat as mirror image for the other side.
Join the shoulder seams using mattress stitch.
Sleeves
Depending on your preference, you can use double pointed needles or the Magic Loop technique to make the sleeves. You can choose to work the sleeves in seed stitch only or cable + seed stitch.
Starting in the underarm, pick up and knit 34(36)38(40)42(44)46(48) sts along the back section edge and 34(36)38(40)42(44)46(48) sts along the front section edge = 68(72)76(80)84(88)92(96) sts. Place a stitch marker for BOR.
Working in double seed stitch/moss stitch from chart row 1, start short rows here. Work in double seed stitch/moss stitch until 8(8)10(10)12(12)14(14) sts remain before BOR. Turn your work and make DS: sl1pw wyif. Now lift your yarn up and over the needle, pulling on it until it creates a double stitch (DS). Work in seed stitch on WS until 8(8)10(10)12(12)14(14) sts remain before BOR, turn your work. Sl1pw and make DS.
Work the RS row until you reach the DS. Knit the DS as a single stitch. K1 and turn your work, sl1pw and make DS. Work the WS row until the DS and work the DS as a single stitch. P1 and turn your work. Repeat these short rows until no more sts remain. You will incorporate 1 additional st on each row. Work the final short row on the WS. Once you have completed the short rows, you will continue to work the sleeve in the round.
When the work measures 2(4)5(4)5(5)4(2) cm [0.75(1.5)2(1.5)2(2)1.5(0.75) in] from the underarm, decrease by 1 st on either side of the SM. Repeat these decreases every 3.5(3)2.5(2.5)2(2)2(2) cm [1.5(1.25)1(0.75)0.75(0.75)0.75 in] a further 10(11)13(14)16(17)18(19) times = 46(48)48(50)50(52)54(56) sts.
When the work measures 39(40)41(42)42(43)43(43) cm [15.25(15.75)16.25(16.5)16.5(17)17(17) in] (women’s sizing) and 42(43)44(45)45(46)46(46) cm [16.5(17)17.25(17.75)17.75(18)18(18) in] (men’s sizing) from the underarm, switch to the smaller needles to work in twisted rib. Work in twisted rib for 8 cm (3 in) and bind off using the Italian method or technique of your choice.
Repeat for the other sleeve.
Finishing
Neckline edge: Slip the neckline sts onto the shorter circular needle and pick up and knit sts along the neckline edge until you have 112(112)112(116)116(116)120(120) sts. Work in twisted rib for 8 cm (3.25 in) and cast off using the Italian method or technique of your choice.
Steam gently to finish.
