Stitch patterns
- Ribbing in the round: *k2, p2*
Left mitten
Using the Lakes yarn and the 3(3½) mm needles, cast on 44 sts and divide them onto four needles, 11 sts each. The beginning of round is between needles I and IV. Work ribbing in the round for 7(8) cm, then knit 1 round, increasing 1 st on each needle (knit the strand of yarn between the sts through the back loop). 48 sts now on the needles.
Switch to the 3½(4) mm needles and work stockinette st for 7(8) rounds.
Begin the colourwork pattern on row 1 of the chart. Repeat the 8 st pattern 6 times. Work rows 2-8 of the chart.
Continue on row 9 as follows: work the 12 sts on needle I, then work the first 10 sts on needle II using a different yarn (= thumb hole). Move the 10 sts back to the left-hand needle and work to end of round following the chart.
Work rows 10-26 of the chart, then use Forests for the rest of the piece.
When the piece measures 17(18) cm from the cuff, begin top decreases: at the beginning of needles I and III, skp (= slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass slipped st over), and at the end of needles II and IV, k2tog. Repeat the decreases on every round until 4 sts remain.
Break the yarn and pull it through the sts. Securely weave in.
Right mitten
Mirror left mitten and work the thumb hole on needle III.
Thumb
Remove the different-coloured yarn. Using the larger needles pick up the sts from the top and bottom edges of the thumb hole. Pick up additional sts from both sides for 23 sts in total. Distribute these onto three needles. Work stockinette st using Midsummer. On the first round decrease 2 sts = 21 sts.
When you have worked for 5(5,5) cm or when the mitten covers half your thumbnail, work the top decreases: k2tog at the end of each needle until 3 sts remain. Then k1 and pass the other sts over from left to right. Securely weave in.
Finishing
Steam the mittens lightly.
