Moorland Socks
Designed by Sisko Sälpäkivi, the timeless Moorland socks are a lovely combination of the traditional and the modern. Use the classic Novita 7 Veljestä yarn and you’ll soon have a pair of warm and durable socks which are ideal for the colder seasons and feature eye-catching details such as the tapering cables.

Construction The socks are knitted from cuff to toe.
Cast on 48(52)56 sts and divide them across four needles, 12(13)14 sts each.The beginning of round is between needles I and IV.Work ribbing in the round for 8(10)10 rounds.
Begin the cable pattern on row 1 of the chart:*work pattern A(B)C [= 24(26)28 sts + 4 sts]*, repeat *–*.8 sts increased, 56(60)64 sts now on the needles, 14(15)16 sts per needle.Work rows 2–9 a total of 3 times, then work rows 2–3 once more.
Begin the heel flap: on needles I and II, work row 4 and decrease 2 sts on both needles = 24(26)28 sts. Leave the other sts on hold.Turn work and purl the WS row.Turn work and begin reinforced stitch pattern:
Row 1 (RS):*slip 1 with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *–* to end.Turn work.
Row 2 (WS):slip 1 with yarn in back, purl to end.Turn work.
Repeat rows 1–2 a total of 12(13)14 times = 24(26)28 rows.
Work the WS row once more and begin turning the heel. Continue the reinforced pattern as established.Work the RS row until 9(9)10 sts remain.Skp (= slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass slipped st over), turn work.Slip 1, p6(8)8, p2tog, turn work.Slip 1, work to last 8(8)9 sts, skp.Continue in this manner, decreasing at the ends with 8(10)10 sts in the centre.When only the centre sts remain, divide the sts onto two needles,4(5)5 sts each.Knit the 4(5)5 sts on the right. The beginning of round is now here, between needles I and IV.
Pick up sts onto needle I: 12(13)14 sts from the left end of the heel flap + 1 st from between the flap and needle II.Knit the 4(5)5 heel flap sts and knit the picked-up sts through the back loop.On needles II and III, work row 4 of the cable chart.Using the needle with 4(5)5 sts, pick up 12(13)14 sts from the right end + 1 st from between needle III and the heel flap. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop and k5.
With these 62(68)72 sts, work stockinette st on needles I and IV (sole) and the cable pattern on needles II and III (instep).Begin gusset decreases: at the end of needle I, k2tog; at the beginning of needle IV, skp.Work 1 round even. Repeat the decreases as established on every other round until 12(13)14 sts remain on both needle I and needle IV.
When the sole measures approx. 18(20)22 cm / 7(7.75)8.75 in or when the sock covers the fifth toe, finish after row 2 of the chart and begin toe decreases:at the end of needle I, k2tog, k1; on needles II and III, work row 10 of chart; at the beginning of needle IV, k1, skp.
Repeat the decreases on needles I and IV on every other round 4(4)3 more times, then work the decreases 5(5)7 times on every round.On needles II and III, work rows 11–22(22)21 of chart.Size 42 only: work row 22 and p2tog at both ends of the cable pattern.8(12)12 sts now on the needles: 2(3)3 sts each on needles I and IV; 2(3)3 sts each on needles II and III.
Break yarn, pull it through the sts, tighten and weave in.
Knit the other sock in the same manner.
