Needles and other supplies
Double-pointed needles: Novita 2½ mm (UK 12-13 / US 1-2) or size needed to obtain gauge. Circular needle (40 cm / 16 in): Novita 2½ mm (UK 12-13 / US 1-2) Until you reach the decreases you can also use a short circular needle.

Stitch patterns:
- Ribbing in the round:
*k2, p2*
With the charcoal yarn held double, cast on 144 sts. Distribute the sts onto four needles and work ribbing in the round for 12 rounds (3 cm).
Break one of the yarns and continue with one strand. Knit 1 round. Knit another round and at the same time increase 24 sts: *k6, increase 1 st (knit the strand of yarn between the sts through the back loop)*, repeat *-* to end of round. 168 sts on the needles.
Begin the colourwork pattern in the round from row 1 of the chart. Work the 12 st pattern repeat 14 times. Work rows 2-9.
Work rows 10-27. Work the 8 st pattern repeat 21 times.
Work rows 28-29. Work the 4 st pattern repeat 42 times.
Work row 30 and at the same time evenly decrease 3 sts = 165 sts. Work rows 31-43. Work the 11 st pattern repeat 15 times.
Work row 44 and at the same time decrease 1 st = 164 sts.
Work rows 45-46. Work the 4 st pattern repeat 41 times. Use the charcoal yarn for the rest of the work. Knit 1 round and at the same time evenly decrease 4 sts = 160 sts. The hat now measures approx. 17 cm.
Begin the decrease rounds:
1st decrease round: *k6, k2tog*, repeat *-* to end of round. 20 sts decreased, 140 sts on the needles.
Knit 3 rounds.
2nd decrease round: *k5, k2tog*, repeat *-* to end of round = 120 sts.
Knit 3 rounds.
3rd decrease round: *k4, k2tog*, repeat *-* to end of round = 100 sts.
Knit 3 rounds.
4th decrease round: *k3, k2tog*, repeat *-* to end of round = 80 sts.
Knit 3 rounds.
5th decrease round: *k2, k2tog*, repeat *-* to end of round = 60 sts.
Knit 2 rounds.
6th decrease round: *k1, k2tog*, repeat *-* to end of round = 40 sts.
Knit 2 rounds.
7th decrease round: K2tog to end of round = 20 sts.
Break the yarn and pass it through the remaining sts. Pull tightly to close the hole and securely weave in.
Finishing
Steam the hat lightly.
Using the tomato-coloured yarn, make a pompom approx. 4 cm in diameter and attach it to the top of the hat.
