Stitch patterns Ribbing in the round: *k1, p1*, repeat *–*. Stockinette stitch in the round: knit all rows.
Gauge 12 sts in stockinette st = 10 cm / 4 in
Left mitten
Cast on 18(20)22(24) sts and divide them onto four needles. The beginning of round is between needles I and IV. Work ribbing in the round for 6(7)8(10) cm.
Then work stockinette stitch in the round for 3(4)5(6) cm.
On the next round, mark the spot for the thumbhole: work the last 3(3)4(5) sts of needle II using a different-coloured yarn. Move the sts back onto the left-hand needle and work stockinette st as before. Work stockinette st for 8(10)12(14) cm after the thumbhole or until the mitten covers the index finger.
Top decreases: at the beginning of needles I and III, k1, skp (= slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass slipped st over); at the end of needles II and IV, k2tog, k1. Repeat the decreases on every other round until 10(8)10(8) sts remain. Break yarn, pull it through the sts and securely weave in.
Right mitten
Mirror left mitten: work the thumb hole at the beginning of needle III.
Thumb
Remove the scrap yarn. Pick up and knit the sts from the top and bottom edges of the thumb opening and additional sts from the sides for 8(9)11(12) sts in total.
Divide the sts onto three needles and work stockinette st in the round for approx. 4(5)6(7) cm. Decrease round: k2tog to end of round. For the women’s and men’s sizes, repeat the decrease round. Break yarn, pull it through the sts and weave in.
Steam the mittens lightly.
