Hieman ujot sukkaraidat Socks
Before Novita's striped sock competition, Minna Keinänen had never designed socks, yet the competition inspired her to enter with no fewer than three designs. Hieman ujot sukkaraidat (Finnish for "slightly shy sock stripes") are knitted with 7 Veljestä Raita in the colour Rainbow. The gradually changing shades of the striped yarn bring joy and surprise to the socks and make them especially addictive to knit.

Stitch patterns 2x2 rib in the round: *k2, p2*, repeat *–*. Stockinette stitch in the round: knit all sts on all rounds. Striped cable pattern in the round: work according to the charts and written instructions.
Gauge 22 sts and 32 rounds in stockinette st = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4"
Construction The socks are worked from cuff to toes.
Notes Tip for smoother stripes at the beginning of round: After colour change, work the first round of a stripe as usual. When beginning the second round in the same colour, pick up the stitch directly below the first stitch of the round (that is, the stitch from the previous colour) and place it at the beginning of needle I. Knit this lifted stitch together with the actual first stitch of the round. Then continue knitting as usual.
Abbreviations
k = knit
k2tog = knit 2 stitches together
p = purl
p2tog = purl 2 stitches together
RS = right side
skp = slip, knit, pass: Slip 1 st as if to knit, knit 1 st, pass the slipped st over the knit st.
st(s) = stitch(es)
WS = wrong side
Leg
Using the main colour, cast on 48(52)56 sts and divide them onto 4 needles, 12(13)14 sts each. The beginning of round is between needles I and IV, at centre back. Join to work in the round. Work in 2x2 rib for 3(4)4 cm / 1.25(1.5)1.5".
Begin striped cable pattern as follows: knit across needle I, k1(2)3 at the beginning of needle II, work row 1 of Chart I (22-st pattern), k1(2)3 at the end of needle III, k across needle IV. Continue as established, working the 22-st cable pattern on the front of the sock and stockinette stitch across the back. Next, work chart rows 2–8, then repeat rows 1–8. Note: When working the contrasting colour rows of chart (rows 3–5), work the whole round using contrasting colour. This results in 3-round stripes in the contrasting colour and 5-round stripes in the main colour. Carry the unused yarn up the inside of the sock at the round change.
When you have worked 4(5)5 contrasting colour stripes (or desired number) and finished with row 8 of Chart I, cut contrasting colour. Next, work the heel using main colour.
Heel
Begin the heel flap: knit the sts of needle I onto needle IV = 24(26)28 sts. Leave the remaining sts on hold. Turn work. P 1 row and at the same time evenly decrease 2 sts = 22(24)26 sts.
Turn work and begin reinforced stitch pattern:
Row 1 (RS): *Slip 1 st purlwise with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *–* to end. Turn work.
Row 2 (WS): Slip 1 st purlwise with yarn in front, p to end. Turn work.
Work rows 1–2 a total of 11(12)13 times = 22(24)26 rows.
Begin turning the heel:
Continue working in reinforced stitch pattern. Work the next row (RS) to last 8(9)9 sts, skp, turn work. Slip 1 st purlwise with yarn in front, p6(6)8, p2tog, turn work. Slip 1 st purlwise with yarn in back, work to last 7(8)8 sts, skp, turn work. Continue as established, decreasing at the sides with 8(8)10 sts at the centre. When only the centre sts remain, divide the heel flap sts onto two needles, 4(4)5 sts each. Knit the first 4(4)5 sts. Continue to work in the round. The round begins here, at the centre of the sole.
Foot
Using needle I, pick up 11(12)13 sts along the left side of the heel flap + 1 st between the heel flap and needle II. Knit the 4(4)5 heel flap sts and knit the picked-up sts through the back loop (twisted). Work the sts of needle II and III in pattern (continuing from row 1 of Chart I). Using the needle with 4(4)5 sts, pick up 11(12)13 sts along the right side of the heel flap + 1 st between needle III and the heel flap. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop (twisted), then k4(4)5. You have 56(60)66 sts.
Continue to work in pattern as on the leg (continuing from row 2 of Chart I) and begin gusset decreases on the next round: at the end of needle I, k2tog; at the beginning of needle IV, skp. Repeat the decreases on every other round until you have 12(13)14 sts on needles I and IV. After the decreases, you have 48(52)56 sts.
Work straight in pattern until the sole measures 17(20)22 cm / 6.75(7.75)8.75" or until the sock covers the fifth toe. Next, work toe decreases while working in pattern as before. Work the cable crosses for as long as possible. Decrease as follows:
Size 34: At the end of needles I and III, k2tog; at the beginning of needles II and IV, skp. Decrease as established on every other round until 6(–)– sts remain on each needle. Then work the decreases on every round. When 8(–)– sts remain, cut yarn, pull yarn tail through the remaining sts, tighten and weave in.
Sizes 38 and 42: At the end of needles I and III, k2tog, k1; at the beginning of needles II and IV, k1, skp. Decrease as established on every other round until –(6)7 sts remain on each needle. Then work the decreases on every round. When –(8)8 sts remain, cut yarn, pull the yarn tail through the remaining sts, tighten and weave in.
Work the second sock in the same way, but work the cable pattern according to Chart II.
