Helle Granny Square Top

The trendiest outfit of the summer is made from crocheted squares!
You can make this top using traditional granny squares, flat flower motifs, raised flower motifs – or by combining different types of squares together! See detailed instructions for the squares here.

Gauge Granny square (whole piece) worked according to basic pattern approx. 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4”. Note. In sizes S–L, 1–2 more rounds will be worked in each square after the basic pattern rounds. Square size in size S is11 x 11 cm / 4.5 x 4.5” and in sizes M & L 12 x 12 cm / 4.75 x 4.75”.

Notes If you use different granny square designs in one project, you may need to use different hook size for different squares to ensure the pieces are the same size. Please note that yarn consumption varies depending on the yarn used and the granny square design chosen.

Granny squares

For the cardigan, you can use any of the three granny squares: simple, flat flower of raised flower. The solid-color sample was made using simple granny squares in color (394) tone. In the multicolor sample, flat flower granny squares have the following color order: Rounds 1–2:(624) opera, round 3: (020) soprano, rounds 4–5: (167) lento.

Size XS only

Work a total of 30 whole pieces according to the granny square pattern of your choice. The size of the pieces should be 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4”.

Size S only

Work a whole piece according to the granny square pattern of your choice. Finish the piece with a sc round:

If you made a simple granny square: Ch1 (= 1 sc), work 1 sc in each dc and chain-1 space and 3 sc in each chain-3 space. Join with sl st in ch at beg of round.

If you made a raised flower granny square: Ch1 (= 1 sc), work 1 sc in each st except at corners work (2 sc in next st) x 3. Join with sl st in ch at beg of round.

If you made a flat flower granny square: Ch1 (= 1 sc), work 1 sc in each sc except at corners work (2 sc in next st) x 2. Join with sl st in ch at beg of round.

The size of the square should now be 11 x 11 cm / 4.5 x 4.5”. Work a total of 30 squares in this way.

Sizes M and L only

Work a piece according to the pattern of your choice. Finish the piece as follows:

If you made a simple granny square: Work 1 more round of dc and ch sts as before.

If you made a raised flower granny square: Work a sc round as above in size S. Then work another sc round as follows: Ch1 (= 1 sc), work 1 sc in each sc except at corners work (2 sc in next st) x 2. Join with sl st in ch at beg of round.

If you made a flat flower granny square: Work a sc round as above in size S. Then work another round in the same way.

The size of the square should now be 12 x 12 cm / 4.75 x 4.75”. Work a total of –(–)30(33) squares in the same way.

All sizes

Assemble the pieces according to the layout diagram. Sew the seams through the back loop using whipstitch.

Shoulder pieces

Work the pieces with the same color that you used for the last round of the squares. Place marker in the middle of both edge pieces at the top edge of the front piece. Join yarn with sl st at the left-hand marker. Work as follows: *Ch2 (= 1st dc), 9(10)11(11) dc, turn work*. Repeat *–*, until the piece measures 20 cm / 8”. Sew the piece to top edge of back piece. Work the other shoulder piece in the same way but start from the edge and work until marker.

Armhole edge

Work the edging with the same color that you used for the last round of the squares. Join yarn with sl st to center of underarm.

Round 1: Ch1, 6(7)8(8) sc, 2 hdc, 4 dc together at corner (work 2 unfinished dc on both sides of corner, yo and pull through all the sts on hook), 2 hdc, 15(16)17(17) sc to end of square. Work 36 sc along the shoulder piece. Work 15(17)19(19) sc on side of square, 2 hdc, 4 dc together at corner, 2 hdc, 6(7)8(8) sc. Continue in spiral rounds.

Round 2: Work 4(5)6(6) sc, 2 hdc, 4 dc together at corner, 2 hdc, 1 sc in each st to 4 sts before corner. Work 2 hdc, 4 dc together at corner, 2 hdc, 1 sc in each st to end of rnd.

Round 3: Work 1 sc in each st and 2 sc together at corners. Sizes XS, S and M only: Join round with sl st, cut yarn and fasten off.

Size L: For 2 more rounds, work 1 sc in each st and 2 sc together at corners. Join the last round with sl st, cut yarn and fasten off.

All sizes: Work the other armhole edge in the same way.

Neck edge

Work the edging with the same color that you used for the last round of the squares. Join yarn with sl st to right corner of the center piece at back of neck. Work in spiral rounds.

Round 1: *Work 19(21)23(23) sc along the center square, 6(7)8(8) sc + 2 hdc to next square, 4 dc together at corner. Work 2 hdc + 28 sc + 2 hdc along shoulder piece, 4 dc together at corner, 2 hdc + 6(7)8(8) sc to next square*, repeat *–* once.

Round 2: *Along next square: 7(8)9(9) sc + 2 sc together + 1 sc + 2 sc together + 7(8)9(9) sc. Along next square: 4(5)6(6) sc + 2 hdc, 4 dc together at corner, 2 hdc, work 1 sc in each st to 4 sts before corner, 2 hdc, 4 dc together at corner, 2 hdc, 4 sc*, repeat *–* once.

Round 3: Work 1 sc in each st. Join with sl st, cut yarn and fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Pin the top to measurements on a flat surface, wrong side up. Spray with water and let dry.
