GaugeGranny square (whole piece) worked according to basic pattern approx. 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4”. Note. In sizes S–L, 1–2 more rounds will be worked in each square after the basic pattern rounds. Square size in size S is11 x 11 cm / 4.5 x 4.5” and in sizes M & L 12 x 12 cm / 4.75 x 4.75”.
Notes If you use different granny square designs in one project, you may need to use different hook size for different squares to ensure the pieces are the same size. Please note that yarn consumption varies depending on the yarn used and the granny square design chosen.
Granny squares
For the skirt, you can use any of the three granny squares: simple, flat flower of raised flower. In the sample, flat flower granny squares were crocheted in the following color order:
Blue as main color: Rounds 1–2:(624) opera, round 3: (020) soprano, remaining rounds: (167) lento.
Green as main color: Rounds 1–2:(538) note, round 3: (020) soprano, remaining rounds: (394) tone.
The pieces for the bottom three rows of squares
Size XS only
Make 27 whole pieces according to the granny square pattern of your choice. The pieces should be 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4” in size.
Size S only
Make one whole piece according to the granny square pattern of your choice. Finish the piece with a sc round as follows:
If you made a simple granny square: Ch1 (= 1 sc), work 1 sc in each dc and chain-1 space and 3 sc in each chain-3 space. Join with sl st in ch at beg of round.
If you made a raised flower granny square: Ch1 (= 1 sc), work 1 sc in each st except at corners work (2 sc in next st) x 3. Join with sl st in ch at beg of round.
If you made a flat flower granny square: Ch1 (= 1 sc), work 1 sc in each sc except at corners work (2 sc in next st) x 2. Join with sl st in ch at beg of round.
The size of the square should now be 11 x 11 cm / 4.5 x 4.5”. Work a total of 27 squares in this way.
Sizes M and L only
Make one whole piece according to the granny square pattern of your choice. Finish the piece as follows:
If you made a simple granny square: Work 1 more round of dc and ch sts as before.
If you made a raised flower granny square: Work a sc round as above in size S. Then work another sc round as follows: Ch1 (= 1 sc), work 1 sc in each sc except at corners work (2 sc in next st) x 2. Join with sl st in ch at beg of round.
If you made a flat flower granny square: Work a sc round as above in size S. Then work another round in the same way.
The size of the square should now be 12 x 12 cm / 4.75 x 4.75”. Work a total of –(–)27(30) squares in the same way.
The pieces for the topmost row of squares
Make 9(9)9(10) smaller granny squares as follows:
Size XS only
If you make simple granny squares: Work rounds 1–4 according to pattern. Last round: Ch1 (= 1 sc), work 1 sc in each dc and chain-1 space and 3 sc in each chain-3 space. Join with sl st in ch at beg of round.
If you make raised flower granny squares: Work rounds 1–6 according to pattern. Last round: Ch1 (= 1 sc), work 1 sc in each st except at corners work (2 sc in next st) x 3. Join with sl st in ch at beg of round.
If you make flat flower granny squares: Work rounds 1–4 according to pattern. The square is ready.
Size S only
Work as the squares for the bottom rows of the skirt but without the last sc round.
Sizes M and L only
If you make simple granny squares: Work rounds 1–5 according to pattern. Last round: Ch1 (= 1 sc), work 1 sc in each dc and chain-1 space and 3 sc in each chain-3 space. Join with sl st in ch at beg of round.
If you make raised flower flat flower granny squares:Work as the squares for the bottom rows of the skirt but without the last sc round.
Assembly
Assemble the pieces according to the layout diagram. Place the 9(9)9(10) smaller squares on the top row. Sew the seams through the back loop using whipstitch. Sew the center back seam (shown in blue in the diagram) leaving a slit the height of the topmost square.
Waistband
Work the waistband along top edge with the same color that you used for the last round of the squares. You can adjust the number of sts to get the best fit possible. Begin from left side of slit:
Row 1: Ch3 (= 1. p), work 16(18)20(20) dc along each square = 144(162)180(200) dc. Note. If necessary, make decreases (work 2 dc together) evenly along the edge to avoid holes and get the right number of sts on the round. Turn work.
Row 2: Ch3 (= 1. p), work a dc row and at the same time evenly decrease 18(18)18(20) sts by working 2 sts together twice along each square (decrease: work 2 unfinished dc, yo and pull through all the sts on hook). You have 126(144)162(180) dc, 14(16)18(18) dc at each square. Turn work.
Row 3: Ch3 (= 1. p), work a dc row and at the same time evenly decrease 18(18)18(20) sts by working 2 sts together twice along each square = 108(126)144(160) dc. You have on 12(14)16(16) dc at each square. Turn work.
Row 4: Ch3 (= 1. p), work 1 dc in each dc to end of row = 108(126)144(160) dc.
Row 5: Work 1 sl st in each st to end of row, then continue by working sc sts along both edges of zipper slit.
Cut yarn and fasten off.
Finishing
Weave in ends. Sew the zipper. Pin the skirt to measurements on a flat surface, wrong side up. Spray with water and let dry.
