Gauge Granny square (whole piece) worked according to basic pattern approx. 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4”. Note. In sizes S–L, 1–2 more rounds will be worked in each square after the basic pattern rounds. Square size in size S is11 x 11 cm / 4.5 x 4.5” and in sizes M & L 12 x 12 cm / 4.75 x 4.75”.
Notes This pattern is written according to the sample garment. If you want to make a midi skirt using granny squares of your choice, follow the mini skirt pattern, but add 2 rows of granny squares to the length.
If needed, use different hook size for different squares to ensure the pieces are the same size.
The pieces for the bottom five rows of squares
Size XS only
Make 39 whole flat flower granny squares with the following color combinations:
Piece 1, 6(6)6(6) pcs: Round 1:(624) opera, round2:(020) soprano, round3: (660) fado, rounds 4–5: (094) bass.
Piece 2, 11(11)11(12) pcs: Round 1:(280) octave, round2:(020) soprano, round3: (633) tempo, rounds 4–5: (094) bass.
Piece 3, 11(11)11(12) pcs: Round 1:(633) tempo, round2:(660) fado, round3: (280) octave, rounds 4–5: (094) bass.
Piece 4, 11(11)11(13) pcs: Round 1:(633) tempo, round2:(624) opera, round3: (020) soprano, rounds 4–5: (094) bass.
In addition, make 6 whole raised flower granny squares with the following color combinations: Round 1:(624) opera, round2:(020) soprano, rounds 3–4: (660) fado, rounds 5–7: (094) bass.
Size S only
Make 39 whole flat flower granny squares as in size XS, but finish each piece with an extra sc round with color bass as follows:
Round 6: Ch1 (= 1 sc), work 1 sc in each sc except at corners work (2 sc in next st) x 2. Join with sl st in ch at beg of round.
In addition, make 6 whole raised flower granny squares with the following color combinations: Round 1:(624) opera, round2:(020) soprano, rounds 3–4: (660) fado, rounds 5–8: (094) bass.
Work round 8 of raised flower squares as follows: Ch1 (= 1 sc), work 1 sc in each st except at corners work (2 sc in next st) x 3. Join with sl st in ch at beg of round.
Sizes M and L only
Make –(–)39(43) whole flat flower granny squares as in size XS, but finish each piece with two extra sc rounds with color bass as follows:
Round 6: Ch1 (= 1 sc), work 1 sc in each sc except at corners work (2 sc in next st) x 2. Join with sl st in ch at beg of round.
Round 7: as round 6.
In addition, make –(–)6(7) whole raised flower granny squares with the following color combinations: Round 1:(624) opera, round2:(020) soprano, rounds 3–4: (660) fado, rounds 5–9: (094) bass.
Work rounds 8 and 9 of raised flower squares as follows:
Round 8:Ch1 (= 1 sc), work 1 sc in each st except at corners work (2 sc in next st) x 3. Join with sl st in ch at beg of round.
Round 9: Ch1 (= 1 sc), work 1 sc in each st except at corners work (2 sc in next st) x 2. Join with sl st in ch at beg of round.
The pieces for the topmost row of squares
Make 9(9)9(10) smaller flat flower granny squares. Work the pieces as above, but do not work the last sc round. The pieces in the topmost row are thus one round smaller than the other pieces in the skirt. Make 2(2)2(2) pieces with color combination 1, 2(2)2(2) pieces with color combination 2, 2(2)2(3) pieces with color combination 3 and 3(3)3(3) pieces with color combination 4.
Assembly
Assemble the pieces according to the layout diagram. The numbers show the order of the different colored pieces, and the bold squares denote raised flower squares. Place the 9(9)9(10) smaller squares on the top row. Sew the seams through the back loop using whipstitch. Sew the center back seam (shown in blue in the diagram) leaving a slit the height of the topmost square.
Waistband
Work the waistband along top edge using color bass. You can adjust the number of sts to get the best fit possible. Begin from left side of slit:
Row 1: Ch3 (= 1. p), work 16(18)20(20) dc along each square = 144(162)180(200) dc. Note. If necessary, make decreases (work 2 dc together) evenly along the edge to avoid holes and get the right number of sts on the round. Turn work.
Row 2: Ch3 (= 1. p), work a dc row and at the same time evenly decrease 18(18)18(20) sts by working 2 sts together twice along each square (decrease: work 2 unfinished dc, yo and pull through all the sts on hook). You have 126(144)162(180) dc, 14(16)18(18) dc at each square. Turn work.
Row 3: Ch3 (= 1. p), work a dc row and at the same time evenly decrease 18(18)18(20) sts by working 2 sts together twice along each square = 108(126)144(160) dc. You have on 12(14)16(16) dc at each square. Turn work.
Row 4: Ch3 (= 1. p), work 1 dc in each dc to end of row = 108(126)144(160) dc.
Row 5: Work 1 sl st in each st to end of row, then continue by working sc sts along both edges of zipper slit.
Cut yarn and fasten off.
Finishing
Weave in ends. Sew the zipper. Pin the skirt to measurements on a flat surface, wrong side up. Spray with water and let dry.
