Stitch patterns:
- Ribbing in the round:
*k1, p1*, repeat *¬-*.
- Stockinette stitch in the round:
knit all rows.
- Colourwork in the round:
work stockinette stitch following the chart and instructions.
- Twisted ribbing in the round:
Round 1 (left twist): *k1 through the back loop, p1 through the back loop*, repeat *-*.
Round 2 (right twist): *Slip 1 st knitwise onto the right-hand needle, move it back onto the left-hand needle and k1. Slip 1 st knit-wise onto the right-hand needle, move it back onto the left-hand needle and p1*, repeat *-*. Keep repeating rounds 1-2.
- Stockinette stitch
Using the smaller needles and the Berry Porridge yarn, cast on 48(60) sts and divide them onto four needles, 12(15) sts each. The beginning of the round is between needles I and IV. Work ribbing in the round for 2 cm.
Switch to the larger needles and the Lichen yarn. Work 2 rounds of stockinette st. Begin the colourwork pattern on row 1 of chart I. Work the 12 st pattern repeat 4(5) times. Work rows 2-22 of the chart, then work rows 23-30 once(twice).
Row 31: using Lichen, k1, k2tog, work until 6 sts remain, skp (= slip 1 st knitwise, k1, pass the slipped st over), k4. 2 sts decreased, 46(58) sts on the needles.
Row 32: work the 2 sts at the right edge of the chart, work the 6 st pattern repeat 6(8) times, work the 8 sts at the left edge. Work rows 33-42 of the chart.
Row 43: using Lichen, k3, k2tog, work until 3 sts remain, skp, k1. 2 sts decreased, 44(56) sts on the needles.
Size 30: Work rows 44-55 of chart I. 2 sts decreased on rows 47 and 51. 40 sts now on the needles.
Size 38: Work rows 44-51 and 56-63 of chart I. 2 sts decreased on rows 47, 51 and 59. 50 sts now on the needles.
Knit 1 round with Lichen, evenly decreasing 0(2) sts = 40(48) sts.
Switch to the smaller needles and work 4(5) cm of twisted ribbing in the round.
Begin the heel flap: continuing in twisted ribbing, work the sts on needle I onto needle IV = 20(24) sts. Leave the other sts on hold. Turn work. Work stockinette st flat:
Row 1 (WS): Slip 1 st with yarn in back, purl to end of row. Turn work.
Row 2 (RS): Slip 1 st with yarn in back, knit to end of row. Turn work.
Work rows 1-2 a total of 8(10) times [= 16(20) rows].
Work another WS row and begin turning the heel: on the heel flap, work the next RS row until 7(9) sts remain. Work the skp decrease (= slip 1 st knitwise, knit 1, pass the slipped st over) and turn work. Slip 1 st, p6(6), p2tog, turn work. Slip 1 st, work until 6(8) sts remain, skp. Continue in this manner, decreasing sts on the sides with 8(8) sts in the middle. When only the middle sts remain, work the RS row and divide the sts onto two needles, 4(4) sts each.
Using a free needle, pick up 10(12) sts from the left edge of the heel flap + 1 st from between the heel flap and needle II. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop using the left-hand sole needle. Knit the sts on needles II and III. Using the needle with 4(4) sts, pick up 10(12) sts from the right edge of the heel flap + 1 st from between needle III and the heel flap. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop and knit the 4(4) heel flap sts.
Continue in stockinette st with all 50(58) sts and work the gusset decreases: k2tog at the end of needle I, skp at the beginning of needle IV. Repeat the decreases on every 2nd round 4(4) more times. 40(48) sts on the needles, 10(12) sts each.
Note: When you have worked 2 cm after the heel, switch to the larger needles. Join the Berry Porridge yarn and begin the colourwork pattern on row 1 of chart II: on needle I work the 2 st pattern repeat as needed, on needles II and III work the 4 st pattern repeat as needed, on needle IV work the 2 st pattern repeat as needed. Now work rows 2-8 of the chart.
Row 9: work 2(0) sts from the right edge of the chart, repeat the 6 st pattern 6(8) times, work 2(0) sts at the left edge. Work rows 10-16 of the chart.
Work rows 1-8 of chart II once more. Size 38: Work another heart stripe as before. Switch to the smaller needles. Use Lichen for the rest of the sock.
Work stockinette st until the sole measures 15(20) cm or until the sock covers your fifth toe. Knit 1 round and begin the toe decreases:
1st decrease round: on each needle, k3(4), k2tog, k3(4), k2tog = 32(40)sts. Work 3(4) rounds without increases.
2nd decrease round: on each needle, k2(3), k2tog, k2(3), k2tog = 24(32) sts. Work 2(3) rounds without increases.
1 st less between the decreases after each decrease round. 1 less round without decreases after each time. Continue in this manner until 8 sts remain in total. Break the yarn and pass it through the sts. Securely weave in.
Knit the other sock to match.
Finishing
Steam the socks lightly.
