Language

Gauge 26 sts in colourwork = 10 cm / 4”

Stitch patterns Twisted rib in the round: *k1 through the back loop, p1*, repeat *–*. Stockinette stitch in the round: knit all sts on all rounds. Colourwork in the round: work in stockinette stitch in the round according to the charts and written instructions.

Construction The socks are worked from cuff to toes. They feature a reinforced heel and barn toe. Notes In version A, choose a self-striping yarn colourway that has no white sections. In both socks, start your ball of yarn in the same way, either from the inside or outside. This way the colours will be arranged in correct order. To make identical socks, start the self-striping yarn at the beginning of the same colour section for both

1

Version A

Leg

Using White (main colour), cast on 52(60)64(72) sts and divide them evenly onto 4 needles, 13(15)16(18) sts each. The beginning of round is between needles I and IV, at centre back. Join to work in the round. Work in twisted rib in the round for 2(3)3(4) cm / 0.75(1.25)1.25(1.5)”. Knit 1 round, evenly increasing 1 st on needles II and III in sizes 30 and 38 only = 54(60)66(72) s.

2

Begin colourwork on row 1 of Chart IA. The 6-st pattern is repeated 9(10)11(12) times per round. Work charted rounds 2–32, then work rounds 33–34 a total of 2(3)4(5) times [= 4(6)8(10) rounds]. Work rounds 35–37. Cut Nalle Raita yarn (contrasting colour).

3

Heel

Using White, knit the sts of needle I onto needle IV = 26(30)32(36) sts. Leave the remaining sts on hold. Turn work. Purl next row, evenly decreasing 0(2)2(2) sts = 26(28)30(34) sts. Begin reinforced stitch pattern:

Row 1 (RS): *Slip 1 st purlwise with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *–* to end. Turn work.

Row 2 (WS): Slip 1 st purlwise with yarn in front, p to end. Turn work.

Work rows 1–2 a total of 13(14)15(16) times. 27(29)31(33) rows in total on the heel flap.

4

Begin turning the heel: Continue working in reinforced stitch pattern. Work the next row (RS) until 10(10)11(12) sts remain, skp, turn work. Slip 1 st purlwise with yarn in front, p6(8)8(10), p2tog, turn work. Slip 1 st purlwise with yarn in back, work to last 9(9)10(11) sts, skp, turn work. Continue as established, decreasing at the sides with 8(10)10(12) sts at the centre. When only the centre sts remain, divide the heel flap sts onto 2 needles, with 4(5)5(6) sts on each. K the first 4(5)5(6) sts. This is the beginning of the round.

5

Using the left needle with 4(5)5(6) sts, pick up 13(14)15(16) sts along the left edge of the heel flap + 1 st from between the heel flap and needle II. Using White, knit the 4(5)5(6) heel flap sts and knit the picked up sts through the back loop. Knit the sts on needles II and III. Using the needle with 4(5)5(6) sts, pick up
13(14)15(16) sts along the right edge of the heel flap + 1 st from between needle III and the heel flap. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop, then k4(5)5(6).

6

You have 64(70)76(82) sts. Begin colourwork on round 2 of Chart II(III)IV(V), working the first gusset decreases according to the chart. Work chart rounds 3–15. After the decreases, you have 54(60)66(72) sts.

7

Continue colourwork from row 15 of Chart IA. The 6-st pattern is repeated 9(10)11(12) each round. Work charted rounds 16–32, then repeat rounds 33–34 until the sole measures 15(17)18(21) cm / 6(6.75)7(8.25)”. Work rounds 35–36. Cut Nalle Raita yarn. With White, k 1 round, evenly decreasing 6(4)10(8) sts =
52(56)56(64) sts. Divide the sts evenly onto the 4 needles, with 12(14)14(16) sts on each.

8

Begin toe decreases: at the end of needles I and III, k2tog, k1; at the beginning of needles II and IV, k1, skp. Repeat the decreases on every other round until you
have 28(32)32(36) sts. Repeat the decreases on every round until you have 8 sts. Cut yarn, pull it through the remaining sts, tighten and weave in.

Work the second sock in the same way.

9

Version B

Work as version A but with Novita Nalle Alpakka yarn. Work the motifs using 3 contrasting colours alternately, always changing to new contrasting colour at the
midpoint of a motif (see Chart IB). When rounds 33–34 are repeated, change to a new contrasting colour at the midpoint of the repeated rounds. The chart shows the number of repeated rounds for size 38.
