Gauge 28 sts in stockinette st = 10 cm / 4 in
Construction The socks are knitted from cuff to toe.
Leg
Cast on 60(65) sts and divide them onto four needles:15, 15, 15 and 15 sts (13, 19, 20 and 13 sts). The beginning of round is between needles I and IV, at the centre back.Join for working in the round. Work garter st for 4 rounds (alternate 1 purl round and 1 knit round).
Begin the lace pattern on row 1 of chart I(II). Repeat the 10(13) st pattern 6(5) times.Work rows 2–4 of the chart, then repeat rows 1–4 three more times.
Work row 5, evenly decreasing 4(2) sts = 56(63) sts.Redistribute the sts:14, 14, 14 and 14 sts (16, 16, 15 and 16 sts).Work row 6. Repeat the 7 st pattern 8(9) times.Work rows 7–17 of the chart.
Resume the lace pattern on row 18 of chart I(II). Repeat the 7(9) st pattern 8(7) times.Work rows 19–29(19–33) of the chart.Work rows 18–29(18–33) and then rows 18–28(18–32).The leg now measures approx. 16(19) cm / 6.25(7.5) in.
Heel
Begin heel flap: knit the sts of needle I onto needle IV; on size 34/35 only, decrease 1 st = 27(31) sts. Leave the other sts on hold.Turn work and begin reinforced stitch pattern:
Row 1 (WS):slip 1 with yarn in back, purl to end.Turn work.
Row 2 (RS):*slip 1 with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *–* until 1 st remains, k1.Turn work.
Repeat rows 1–2 a total of 14(15) times, then work row 1 once more.29(31) rows in total.
Begin turning the heel.Work reinforced pattern as established.Work the RS row until 9(10) sts remain.Skp (= slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass slipped st over), turn work.Slip 1, p9(11), p2tog, turn work.Slip 1, work to last 8(9) sts, skp.Continue as established, decreasing at the ends with 11(13) sts in the centre. When only the centre sts remain, divide the heel flap sts onto two needles, 5(6) sts on the right and 6(7) sts on the left.
Foot
Using a free needle, pick up 14(15) sts from the left end of the heel flap + 1 st from between the flap and needle II.Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop onto the left-hand heel needle.Needles II and III: knit all sts.Using the needle with 5(6) sts, pick up 15(15) sts from the right end of the flap + 1 st from between needle III and the flap. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop and k6.70(77) sts now on the needles.
Work lace pattern and stockinette st following row 18 of the chart: at the beginning of needle I, k7.Repeat the 7(9) st lace pattern 8(7) times.7 sts remaining at the end of needle IV, k7.
On the next round, begin gusset decreases: k6, skp, knit to last 8 sts, k2tog, k6.Work stockinette st and the lace pattern; repeat the gusset decreases on every other round 6 more times.Note:Next decrease round: k5, skp, knit to last 7 sts, k2tog, k5.Keep working the decreases in this manner. The decrease moves 1 st toward the centre after each time. The last decreases are worked at the beginning of needle I and end of needle IV. 56(63) sts on the needles after the decreases.
With all sts, work lace pattern until the foot measures 17(20) cm / 6.75(7.75) in or desired length.Note:Complete the final lace motif. If needed, begin the toe decreases during the lace section.
Begin toe decreases:at the end of needles I and III, k2tog, k1; at the beginning of needles II and IV, k1, skp.Decrease as established on every other round until 32(39) sts remain. Then work the decreases on every round. When 12(13) sts remain, break yarn, pull it through the sts and securely weave in.
