Gauge 21 sts in stockinette st = 10 cm / 4 in; width of cable pattern [24(26) sts] approx. 20(21) cm / 7.75(8.25) in
Using the 5 mm double-pointed needle, cast on 48(52) sts and divide them across the four smaller needles, 12(13) sts each.The beginning of round is between needles I and IV, at the side.
Begin the rib pattern on row 1 of chart I(II). Repeat the 24(26) st pattern 2 times.Then work row 2 a total of 9 times (= 10 rounds).
Work row 3 of the chart.8 sts increased, 56(60) sts on the needles, 14(15) sts per needle.
Begin the cable pattern on row 4 of the chart. Repeat the 28(30) st pattern 2 times.Work rows 5–27 of the chart and then rows 4–9 once more.Knit 1 st from needle I onto needle IV. Slip 1 st from needle II to needle III.13(14) sts on needles I and II, 15(16) sts on needles III and IV.
Turn work and begin the heel flap on needles IV and III: p5(6), p2tog, 3 n, p2tog, p6, p2tog, p3, p2tog, p5(6).26(28) sts in the heel flap.
Turn work and begin reinforced stitch pattern:
Row 1 (RS):*slip 1 with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *–* until 1 st remains, k1.Turn work.
Row 2 (WS):slip 1 with yarn in back, purl to end.Turn work.
Repeat rows 1–2 a total of 13(14) times = 26(28) rows.
Begin turning the heel. Continue the reinforced pattern as established.Work the RS row until 9(9) sts remain.Skp (= slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass slipped st over), turn work.Slip 1, p8(10), p2tog, turn work.Slip 1, work to last 8(8) sts, skp.Continue as established, decreasing at the ends with 10(12) sts in the centre. When only the centre sts remain, divide the heel flap sts onto two needles, 5(6) sts each.Knit the 5(6) sts (needle IV) on the right.The beginning of round is now here.

On needles I and II (instep), keep working the cable pattern; on needles III and IV (sole) work stockinette st. Begin gusset decreases:at the end of needle I, k2tog; at the beginning of needle IV, skp.Repeat the decreases on every other round until 52(56) sts remain. 13(14) sts on each needle.
When the sole measures 20(22) cm / 7.75(8.75) in or when the sock covers the fifth toe, begin toe decreases:at the end of needles I and III, k2tog, k1; at the beginning of needles II and IV, k1, skp.Repeat the decreases on every other round until 24(28) sts remain, 6(7) sts on each needle.Repeat the decreases on every round until 8 sts remain.
Break yarn, pull it through the sts, tighten and weave in.
Knit the other sock in the same manner.
Finishing
