Follow the chart and written instructions.
Tension
16 sts over stocking stich or colourwork (change to larger needles if necessary) = 10 cm
Using smaller double pointed needles (dpns) and MC, cast on 5 sts for ear flap. Start working in st st. At the same time increase on every RS row in the following way: k1, M1R, k to last st, M1L, k1. Repeat these increases for a total of 8 times = 21 sts.
Next row: P to end.
After that, place the sts on hold for a while and cut yarn.
Make another ear flap in the same way but do not cut yarn. Next, join the ear flaps starting with the second one and working on a RS row:
Next row (RS): K1, M1R, k20, cast on 10 sts for back neck, k20 (second ear flap), M1L, k1 = 54 sts.
Turn work and p 1 row. Turn work.
Next row (RS): K1, M1R, k to last st, M1L, k1 = 56 sts.
Turn work and p 1 row. Turn work.
Next row (RS): K to end and cast on 27 sts for front = 83 sts.
Next, divide the sts onto four dpns and join to work in the round.
Next round: K28, PM to mark the beginning of the round, work to end.
K 4 rounds. Next, take CC into work and start following the colourwork chart at row 1 (change to larger needles if necessary) in the following way:
Round 1: Work row 1 of the chart and at the same time decrease 1 st = 82 sts.
Round 2: Using MC k to end.
Round 3: Work row 3 of the chart by repeating the 8 st repeat (note that the pattern repeat won't line up with the total number of sts).
Work rows 4-23.
K 2 rounds with MC (the front should now measure about 13 cm).
Next, start decreasing for the top:
Decrease round 1: Skp, k9, *skp, k10*, repeat *-* for 4 times more, skp, k9 = 75 sts.
K 3 rounds.
Decrease round 2: Skp, k8, *skp, k9*, repeat *-* for 4 times more, skp, k8 = 68 sts.
K 3 rounds.
Decrease round 3: Skp, k7, *skp, k8*, repeat *-* for 4 times more, skp, k7s.
K 3 rounds.
Decrease round 4: Skp, k6, *skp, k7*, repeat *-* for 4 times more, skp, k6.

Work the rest of the hat with MC.
When you have completed the decreases, you have 19 sts on the needles. K 1 round.
Next round: K2tog to end.
Cut yarn, thread through the remaining sts and pull tight. Weave in ends.
Finishing
Work a crochet edging in the following way: With the WS facing, attach CC and dc around the lower edge of the hat (height of one dc row = ca. 1 cm). Turn the work so that the RS is facing, attach MC and work 1dc into each st of the previous round. Cut yarns and weave in ends.
Add a braided tie at the point of an ear flap: For one braid cut two lengths of MC and two lengths of CC, 75 cm each. Draw strands through a double crochet stitch worked with CC at the point of an ear flap. Braid them for 20 cm. Knot the braid and trim the ends even at 6 cm from the knot. Repeat for the other ear flap.
Make a tassel (length about 10 cm) and secure on the top of the hat (see drawing).
