- Ribbing in the round:
*k1, p1*
Left mitten
Using the main colour, cast on 28 sts and distribute the sts onto four double-pointed needles, 7 sts each. The beginning of the round is between needles IV and I. Work 5 cm of ribbing in the round.
Knit 1 round and at the same time increase 1 st onto needles I and III = 30 sts.
Begin the colourwork from row 1 of chart I. Work rows 1-9.
Work the thumb hole on row 10 of the chart: work the 8 sts on needle I, k1 from needle II and leave the following 6 sts on hold for the thumb using e.g. a piece of yarn. Cast on 6 sts following the chart and work to the end of round.
Work rows 11-25 of the chart.
Work the rest of the mitten in stockinette st using the main colour. At the same time, begin the top decreases: on needles I and III k1, skp (=slip 1 st knitwise, k1, pass the slipped st over), at the end of needles II and IV k2tog, k1. Repeat the decreases on each round until 10 sts remain. Break the yarn, pass it through the remaining sts and securely weave in the yarn ends.

Thumbs
Move the thumb sts back onto the needles and in addition pick up 8 sts from the thumb hole edge. Distribute these 14 sts evenly onto three double-pointed needles. Using the main colour, work stockinette st in the round and on the first round evenly decrease 2 sts. 12 sts on the needles, 4 sts each.
When you have worked 4 cm or when the thumb covers half of the thumb nail, begin the top decreases: k2tog at the end of each needle. Repeat the decreases until 4 sts remain.
K1 and pass the remaining sts over this st, from left to right. Break the yarn and securely weave in the yarn end.
Work the other thumb to match.
Finishing
Block the mittens to measurements and steam lightly.
