Relaxed and playful, these striped pants for children can be knitted from either Novita Cotton Soft or Novita Wool Cotton.

Legs
Using the double-pointed needles and the black yarn, cast on 40(40)44 sts for the first leg and distribute the sts onto four double-pointed needles. Work ribbing in the round. Alternate 7 rounds of black and 7 rounds of off-white throughout the piece.
When the ribbing measures 6 cm, switch to working stockinette st in the round. On the first round, evenly increase 0(2)0 sts = 40(42)44 sts.
When the piece measures 8(8)6,5 cm, increase 1 st on both sides of the beginning of round: k1, make 1 (=pick up the strand of yarn between the sts and knit it through the back loop), and when 1 st remains, m1, k1. Repeat the increases every 1,5(2)2 cm 19(8)21 more times and then every 1,5 cm 0(12)0 times = 80(84)88 sts.
Leave the sts on hold and knit the other leg to match.
Body
Place both legs onto the longer circular needle so that the increases (inner seams) face each other = 160(168)176 sts. Mark the points where the two legs meet (middle front and back) with e.g. a different-coloured yarn (the back midpoint is at the beginning of the round).
Continue working stockinette st in the round, striping as before, and decrease 1 st on both side of the markers: k2tog through the back loop before the marker and k2tog after the marker. 4 sts decreased on the round. Repeat the decreases every other round 6(7)8 more times = 132(136)140 sts.
When the crotch measures 17(18)19 cm work the back shaping: work the first 16(17)17 sts, turn work, p32(34)34, turn work, work 48(51)51 sts, turn work, p64(68)68, turn work, work 81(85)86 sts, turn work, and p98(102)104.
Turn work and continue working stockinette st with all the sts for 1,5 cm. Purl 1 round (=fold) and work another 1,5 cm of stockinette st. Bind off.
Finishing
Fold the waistband along the purl row and attach it onto the wrong side of the work. Pass a rubber band into the waistband.
Steam the pants lightly.
