Stitch patterns Twisted ribbing in the round: *k1 through back loop, p1*, repeat *–*. Stockinette stitch in the round: knit all rows. Lace pattern: follow the chart and instructions. Gauge 25 sts and 35 rows in lace pattern = 10 cm / 4 in
Cast on 56 sts and divide them onto four double-pointed needles, 14 sts each. The beginning of round is between needles I and IV. Work twisted ribbing in the round for 2,5 cm.
Begin the lace pattern on row 1 of the chart. Repeat the 8 st pattern 7 times. Work rows 2–26 of the chart, then keep repeating rows 1–26.
When the leg measures approx. 15 cm, begin the heel flap: knit the sts on needle I and the first st of needle II onto needle IV = 29 sts. Leave the other sts on hold. Turn work.
Reinforced stitch pattern:
Row 1: (WS) slip 1 with yarn in back, purl to end. Turn work.
Row 2: (RS) *slip 1 with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *–* to last st, k1.
Work rows 1–2 a total of 14 times (= 28 rows).
Begin French heel turn:
Row 1: slip 1 with yarn in back, k16, skp (= slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass slipped st over), k1. Turn work.
Row 2: (WS) slip 1 with yarn in front, p6, p2tog, p1. Turn work.
Row 3: slip 1 with yarn in back, knit to last st before gap, skp, k1. Turn work.
Row 4: (WS) slip 1 with yarn in front, purl to last st before gap, p2tog, p1. Turn work.
Keep repeating rows 3–4 until all sts have been worked (turn work right after the last decrease without working the last k1/p1).
When only the middle sts remain, divide the sts to two needles. Using a free needle pick up 14 sts from the left end of the heel flap + 1 st from between the needles. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop onto needle I. On needles II and III: k1, work 24 sts in lace pattern (8 st pattern repeated 3 times), k2 (end of needle III). Pick up 14 sts from the right end of the flap + 1 st from between the needles. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop onto needle IV.
On needles I and IV work stockinette st. On needles II and III keep working the lace pattern and begin gusset decreases: at the end of needle I, k2tog; at the beginning of needle IV, skp. Repeat the decreases on every other round until 56 sts remain (15 sts needle I, 13 sts needle II, 14 sts needle III and IV).
When the sole measures 19 cm or when the sock covers the fifth toe, knit 1 round with all sts and then redistribute the sts so that there are 14 sts on each needle.
Work stockinette st with all sts and begin toe decreases: at the end of needles I and III, k2tog, k1; at the beginning of needles II and IV, k1, skp. Repeat the decreases every other round until 6 sts remain on each needle.
Redistribute the sts onto two needles, 12 sts each on instep and sole. Graft the sts together.
Knit the other sock in the same manner.
Finishing
Lightly steam the socks.
