Berry picking is a national pastime in Finland, and in the autumn, thousands of Finns pack their bags and head for the woods. Unisex hat is knitted top-down.

Stitch patterns
- Stockinette stitch in the round: knit all rows.
- Cable pattern in the round: follow the chart and instructions.
Gauge
29 sts and 40 rows in stockinette st with smaller needles, or 23 sts in cable pattern
Chain 16 for a beginning chain. Using the double-pointed needles pick up 1 st per ch = 16 sts, 4 sts per needle.
Work stockinette st in the round and begin increases: *kfb (= knit front and back), work stockinette st to last st on needle, kfb*, repeat *-* 4 times in total. 8 sts increased and 24 sts on the needles, 6 sts each.
Repeat the increases on every round until there are 64 sts in total and then on every other round until there are 120(128) sts in total. Men's size: after 2 rounds increase 1 st at the beginning of each needle = 120(132) sts.
Work stockinette st until the hat measures 16(18) cm.
Switch to the circular needle and begin the cable pattern on row 1 of chart I(II). Repeat the 40(42) st pattern 3(3) times. Work rows 2-8 of the chart, then keep repeating rows 1-8.
When the cable section measures 15(17) cm, bind off loosely. Fold the brim under and sew the bind-off edge to the starting point of the cable pattern.
Finishing
Pass a piece of yarn through the beginning chain and close the hole. Securely weave in all ends.
Steam and shape. Make a pompom approx. 6 cm in diameter and attach it to the top.
