Do you actually need a chunky woollen brioche hat in the middle of summer? Sure you do. Like when your Finnish friend takes you for a swim in the ice-cold lake. Some Finns make a point in taking the year’s first outdoor bath as early as possible, and frankly, the waters rarely feel warm before July. So while your butt may be freezing off, your head will stay warm with this beanie. Adjust the length so you can double-fold or triple-fold the rim as you wish.

Stitch pattern Brioche in the round: Round 1: *k1, slip 1 yarn over (sl1yo)*, repeat *–* to end of round. Round 2: *sl1yo, purl together the yo and next st (brp)*, repeat *–* to end of round. Round 3: *knit together the yo and next st (brk), sl1yo*, repeat *–* to end of round. Keep repeating rounds 2–3. Gauge 17 sts in brioche, lightly stretched = 10 cm / 4 in
Using scrap yarn provisionally cast on 44(48) sts on the circular needle. Join the Aqua or Squirrel yarn and work as follows:
Set-up round 1 (increase round): (RS) *k1, yarn over*, repeat *–* to end of round = 88(96) sts. Place marker for beginning of round and work in the round:
Set-up round 2: *slip 1 purlwise with yarn in back, purl the yo on the previous round*, repeat *–* to end of round.
Set-up round 3: *k1, slip 1 purlwise with yarn in front*, repeat *–* to end of round.
Now unravel the provisional cast-on.
Work brioche in the round:
Round 1: *k1, slip 1 yarn over (sl1yo)*, repeat *–* to end of round.
Round 2: *sl1yo, purl together the yo and next st (brp)*, repeat *–* to end of round.
Round 3: *knit together the yo and next st (brk), sl1yo*, repeat *–* to end of round. Keep repeating rounds 2–3.
When the hat measures approx. 22(24) cm (Aqua) or 29(32) cm (Squirrel), finish with round 2 and begin decreases:
Decrease round 1: *brk, sl1yo, sssk (= slip the right-hand st and its yo knitwise to the right-hand needle, slip the purl st knitwise to the right-hand needle, slip the right-hand st and its yo knitwise to the right-hand needle, move the slipped sts back to the left-hand needle and knit them together through the back loop), work 13(15) sts in brioche, k3tog (= knit 3 sts and their yos together), sl1yo, place marker*, repeat *–* 3 more times. 16 sts decreased, 72(80) sts on the needles.
Work 5 rounds in brioche.
Decrease round 2: *brk, sl1yo, sssk, work brioche to last 4 sts before marker, k3tog, sl1yo, slip marker*, repeat *–* 3 more times. 16 sts decreased, 56(64) sts on the needles.
Repeat the decreases on every 6th round 2 more times = 24(32) sts.
Note: Switch to the double-pointed needles when you need to.
Work brioche in the round for 5 rounds. Next round:
