Stitch patterns Ribbing in the round: *k2, p2*, repeat *–*. Stockinette stitch in the round: knit all rows. Cable pattern in the round: follow the chart and instructions.

Gauge 21 sts in stockinette st = 10 cm / 4 in

Cast on 72 sts and divide them onto four double-pointed needles, 18 sts each. The beginning of round is between needles I and IV. Begin ribbing: k1, p2, *k2, p2*, repeat *–* until 1 st remains, k1. Work ribbing in the round for 16 cm.

Now begin the cable pattern in the front of the sock on row 1 of the chart: work 23 sts in ribbing, work row 1 of chart (26 sts + 6 sts – 2 sts), work 23 sts in ribbing. 4 sts increased, 76 sts on the needles.

Redistribute the sts: 23 sts on needle I; 15 sts on needle II; 15 sts on needle III; 23 sts on needle IV. Work ribbing with the 23 sts at the beginning and end of round. In sections A and C of the cable pattern, keep repeating rows 2–11; in section B, keep repeating rows 2–9.

When the leg measures 26 cm, decrease as follows: on needle I, k1, *p2tog, k2*, repeat *–* 5 times in total, p2tog. On needles II and III, work cable pattern. On needle IV, *p2tog, k2*, repeat *–* 5 times in total, p2tog, k1. 64 sts on the needles: 17 sts on needle I; 15 sts on needle II; 15 sts on needle III; 17 sts on needle IV.

On needles I and IV, knit the knit sts and purl the purl sts. On needles II and III, work cable pattern.

When the leg measures 30 cm, decrease as follows: on needles I and IV, work stockinette st and evenly decrease 4 sts on both needles = 58 sts. Redistribute the sts so that there are 14 sts on each needle.

When the leg measures 34 cm, begin heel flap: knit the sts on needle I onto needle IV (= 28 sts). Leave the other sts on hold. Turn work and begin reinforced stitch pattern:

Row 1: (WS) slip 1 with yarn in back, purl to end. Turn work.

Row 2: (RS) *slip 1 with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *–* to end. Turn work.

Repeat rows 1–2 a total of 14 times (= 28 rows).

Work the WS row once more and begin turning the heel. Continue the reinforced pattern as established. Work the RS row until 10 sts remain. Skp (= slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass slipped st over), turn work. Slip 1, p8, p2tog, turn work. Slip 1, work to last 9 sts, skp. Continue in this manner, decreasing at the ends with 10 sts in the middle. When only the middle sts remain, divide the sts onto two needles, 5 sts each. Knit the 5 sts on the right. The beginning of round is now here.

Using a free needle, pick up 14 sts from the left end of the heel flap + 1 st from between the flap and needle II. Knit the 5 heel flap sts and knit the picked-up sts through the back loop. On needles II and III, work cable pattern. Using the needle with 5 sts, pick up 14 sts from the right end + 1 st from between needle III and the heel flap. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop and k5.

68 sts on the needles. Work cable pattern on needles II and III and stockinette st on needles I and IV and begin gusset decreases: at the end of needle I, k2tog; at the beginning of needle IV, skp. Repeat the decreases on every other round until 14 sts remain on needles I and IV.

When the sole measures 22(25) cm or the sock covers the fifth toe, begin toe decreases while working the cable pattern on needles II and III. At the end of needles I and III, k2tog, k1; at the beginning of needles II and IV, k1, skp. Repeat the decreases on every other round 7 times in total. Then work the decreases on every round. When 8 sts remain, break yarn, pull it through the sts and securely weave in.

Knit the other sock in the same manner.

Finishing
