Socktober: By the sea -socks Novita Nalle
Designed by German knitwear designer Kerstin Balke, the By the Sea wool socks take you to the sea. Balke is particularly known for her socks, which feature a mix of fresh colours and bold stripes. In these men's wool socks, a wavy stripe pattern is created by knitting a two-colour stranded colourwork pattern. Knitted with Novita Nalle yarn, these socks are light and warm at the same time. See also Kerstin Balke's other Socktober socks: Late Summer and Harlequin.

Gauge swatch Ribbing in the round: *k2, p2*, repeat *–*. Flat stocking stitch: knit right side (RS) and purl wrong side (WS). Colourwork: work all rows in stocking stitch as shown in chart and pattern instructions.
Tension 30 sts and 36 rows of colourwork = 10 cm
Before you start Use Chart 1 for your first sock and Chart 2 for your second sock
Leg
Cast on 64 sts using Denim and divide onto four needles, 16 sts each. Needle 1 marks the start of a new round. Join to work in the round and knit 15 rounds of rib stitch.
Start the colourwork pattern at Row 1 of Chart 1(2) and repeat the 4 st pattern 16 times. Work chart rows 2–9. Repeat Rows 1–9 a further 4 times. The leg should now measure approx. 19 cm. Break yarn.
Heel
Using Denim, start the heel flap by knitting the sts on Needle 1 and Needle 4 onto a single needle = 32 sts. Leave the remaining sts for now. Turn your work and continue in flat stocking stitch:
Row 1 (WS): slip one st, with yarn on WS, and purl remaining sts to end. Turn your work.
Row 2 (RS): *slip one st, with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *–* to end.
Repeat Rounds 1–2 15 times, then repeat Round 1 one more time = 31 rows.
Begin heel decreases in stocking stitch as follows: Continue to work the RS row until until 11 sts remain. Now slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass slipped st over (skp) and turn your work. Slip 1 st, purl 10 st, p2tog and turn work. Slip 1 st, knit until 10 sts remain, skp. Continue to work these decreases from the sides, always keeping 12 sts in the middle of your work. When no more side sts remain, divide your heel sts between two needles, 6 sts on each. Knit the 6 sts on the right-hand needle. This is now the beginning of a new row.
Foot
Sock 1
Using the left needle (with 6 sts already on it), pick up 15 sts from the left side of the heel flap + 1 st from between the heel flap and Needle 2. For sts on Needle 1, alternate between 2 sts in Denim and 2 sts in Linen (finishing with 2 sts in Denim at end of row). Knit the 6 sts on the heel flap and knit the picked up sts through the back loop (tbl). Work sts on Needles 2 and 3 according to pattern starting from Row 1 of Chart 1. Using the needle with 6 sts on it, pick up 15 sts from the right side of the heel flap + 1 sts from between the heel flap and Needle 3. Work these sts on Needle 4 in sets of 2 sts, alternating between 2 sts in Linen and 2 sts in Denim (finishing with 2 sts in Linen at end of row). Knit the picked up sts tbl and knit the 6 heel sts.
Sock 2
Using the left needle (with 6 sts already on it), pick up 15 sts from the left side of the heel flap + 1 st from between the heel flap and Needle 2. Work these sts on Needle 1 in sets of 2 sts, alternating between 2 sts in Linen and 2 sts in Denim (finishing with 2 sts in Linen at end of row). Knit the 6 sts on the heel flap and knit the picked up sts tbl. Work sts on Needles 2 and 3 according to the pattern starting from Row 1 of Chart 2. Using the needle with 6 sts already on it, pick up 15 sts from the right side of the heel flap + 1 sts from between the heel flap and Needle 3. Work these sts on Needle 4, alternating between 2 sts in Denim and 2 sts in Linen (finishing with 2 sts in Denim at end of row). Knit the picked up sts tbl and knit the 6 heel sts.
Both socks
Continue according to chart as follows: knit all sts on Needle 1 and Needle 4, working all sts in Denim in Denim and all sts in Linen in Linen. For Needle 2 and Needle 3, resume chart pattern from Row 2. Work all sts on Needle 2 and Needle 3 as per Rows 3–6 and repeat Rows 1–6 two more times (three times in total).
Work the gusset decreases as your work the chart: when 2 sts remain on Needle 1, k2tog and at the start of Needle 4 ssk tbl (slip two stitches individually knitwise to right needle, return sts to the left needle and knit together through the back loop). Important Work the decreases using the first colour on the needle as you start the gusset decreases. On the following row, work the remaining st in this colour too. Work the last decrease with the colour you will continue to work with. Decrease as above on every other row until 16 sts remain on each needle.
Once you have repeated chart rows 1–6 a total of three times, continue to work all sts as per Row 1 of chart. Work Rows 2–9. Now work Rows 1–9 and 1–6. The foot should now measure approx. 23 cm. Break off Linen and finish the sock in Denim.
Start the toe decreases here: k2tog at the end of Needle 1 and Needle 3 + k1 and at the start of Needle 2 and Needle 4 k1 and ssk. Work the decreases as above on every second round until 24 sts remain. Now repeat the decreases on every round until 8 sts remain. Break yarn and draw through the stitches to fasten off. Weave in end.
Repeat to make second sock.
