Ruusutarhan kuiskaus Socks
Hanne-Mari Rautio, winner of Novita's striped sock competition, designed these rose-themed socks at her daughter's request. The competition inspired her to explore how a delicate colourwork motif and a multicoloured striped yarn would work together. The result is an enchanting pair of socks where blooming roses and shifting shades come together in a vibrant whole.

Abbreviations
k = knit
k2tog = knit 2 stitches together
m1l = make one left: Insert the left needle under the strand that runs between two stitches from front to back. Knit this strand through the back loop.
p = purl
p2tog = purl 2 stitches together
RS = right side
skp = slip, knit, pass: Slip 1 st as if to knit, knit 1 st, pass the slipped st over the knit st.
st(s) = stitch(es)
WS = wrong side
yo = yarn over
Leg
Using colour Dream, cast on 70 sts and divide them onto 4 needles as follows: 18 sts on needles I and III, 17 sts on needles II and IV. The beginning of round is between needles I and IV, at centre back. Join to work in the round. Work in mock cable pattern as follows:
Rounds 1–4: *K3, p2*, rep *–* to end.
Round 5: *Slip 1 st knitwise, k2, pass the slipped st over the two knit sts, p2*, rep *–* to end = 56 sts.
Round 6: *K1, yo, k1, p2*, rep *–* to end = 70 sts.
Repeat rounds 1–6 another 3 times, then work rounds 1–2 once more. K1 round, evenly increasing 1 st between each set of two purl sts. Use m1l increases. You have 84 sts.
Redistribute the sts as follows: place 23 sts on needles I, II and III, 15 sts on needle IV.
Join colour Rose Garden and begin colourwork pattern on round 1 of Chart I. Then work rounds 2–41. Work round 42 and decrease 2 sts according to the chart: at the beginning of needle I, skp, at the end of needle III, k2tog = 82 sts.
Work charted rounds 43–89. The decreases are repeated every 5th round another 9 times. You have 64 sts. Next, work round 90 of Chart I until you have 8 sts left on needle III. Work the remaining 8 sts and the sts of needle IV onto one needle for the heel flap according to the chart. Cut colour Rose Garden. Using colour Dream, knit 9 sts from needle I onto the heel flap needle (needle IV).
Heel
You now have 32 sts for the heel flap on needle IV, leave the remaining sts on hold. Divide the sts you have on hold evenly onto two needles, 16 sts each. These are needles II and III.
Work the heel back and forth. Turn work to WS and begin reinforced stitch pattern:
Row 1 (WS): Slip 1 st purlwise with yarn in front, p to end. Turn work.
Row 2 (RS): *Slip 1 st purlwise with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *–* to end. Turn work.
Work rows 1–2 a total of 16 times, then work row 1 once more = 33 rows.
Begin turning the heel:
Continue working in reinforced stitch pattern. Work the next row (RS) until 11 sts remain, skp, turn work. Slip 1 st purlwise with yarn in front, p10 (until 11 sts remain), p2tog, turn work. Slip 1 st purlwise with yarn in back, work to last 10 sts, skp, turn work. Continue as established, decreasing at the sides with 12 sts at the centre. When only the centre sts remain, divide the heel flap sts onto two needles, 6 sts each. Knit the first 6 sts. Continue to work in the round. The round begins here, at the centre of the sole.
Foot
Join colour Rose Garden and begin colourwork pattern on round 1 of Chart II. Knit the next 6 heel flap sts (needle I). Using the free needle, pick up 17 sts along the left side of the heel flap + 1 st between the heel flap and needle II. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop on needle I. K across needles II and III. Using the needle with 6 sts, pick up 17 sts along the right side of the heel flap + 1 st between needle III and the heel flap. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop (twisted), then k6. You have 80 sts.
Work round 2 of Chart II and begin gusset decreases according to the chart: at the end of needle I, k2tog; at the beginning of needle IV, skp. Work charted rounds 3–14. The decreases are repeated every round twice, then every second round 5 times. You have 64 sts.
Work to end of Chart II, then cut colour Rose Garden. You have 16 sts on each needle. Work the rest of the sock in stockinette stitch in the round using colour Dream. When the sole measures 20 cm / 7.75" or the sock covers the fifth toe, begin toe decreases. The placement of the decreases changes on every round, preventing a distinct decrease line from forming at the toe of the sock.
Work as follows:
Round 1: Knit all sts, working the 4th and 5th st of each needle together = 60 sts.
Round 2: Knit all sts, working the 7th and 8th st of each needle together = 56 sts.
Round 3: Knit all sts, working the last 2 sts of each needle together = 52 sts.
Round 4: Knit all sts, working the 3rd and 4th st of each needle together = 48 sts.
Work as established, decreasing 1 st on each needle on each round and changing the place of the decreases each round. When 8 sts remain, cut yarn, pull the yarn tail through the remaining sts, tighten and weave in.
Work the second sock in the same way.
Finishing
Weave in ends. Wet block or steam lightly.
