Stitch patterns
- Ribbing in the round: *k2, p2*
Using Midsummer cast on 72(80) sts and divide them onto four needles, 18(20) sts each. The beginning of round is between needles I and IV. Work ribbing in the round for 3(4) cm.
Join Islet and begin the colourwork pattern on row 1 of the chart. Repeat the 8 st pattern 9(10) times. Work rows 2-28 of the chart.
Continue using Inspiration. Knit 1 round.
On the next round begin decreases and ribbing on needles I and IV: k1, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2 (= 11 sts), k2tog, k5(7), *k7(8), k2tog*, repeat *-* 3 more times, k5(7), skp (= slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass slipped st over), p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k1 (= 11 sts). 6 sts decreased, 66(74) sts on the needles.
Keep working stockinette st and ribbing at the back with 11+11 sts on needles I and IV. Repeat the decreases (only on both sides of the ribbing) on every 4th round 7(9) more times = 52(56) sts. Redistribute the sts, 13(14) sts per needle.
Now work ribbing with all sts, making sure to maintain the established pattern at the back.
When the leg measures 32(34) cm, begin the heel flap: work the sts on needle I as they appear onto needle IV [= 26(28) sts]. Leave the other sts on hold. Turn work and begin reinforced pattern using Islet:
Row 1: (WS) slip 1 with yarn in back and purl to end, evenly decreasing 4 sts = 22(24) sts. Turn work.
Row 2: (RS) *slip 1 with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *-* to end. Turn work.
Work rows 1-2 a total of 11(12) times [= 22(24) rows].
Work the WS row once more and begin turning the heel: continue the reinforced pattern as established. Work the RS row until 8(9) sts remain. Skp (= slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass slipped st over), turn work. Slip 1, p6, p2tog, turn work. Slip 1, work to last 7(8) sts, skp. Continue in this manner, decreasing at the ends with 8 sts in the middle. When only the middle sts remain, divide the sts onto two needles, 4 sts each.
Using needle I pick up 11(12) sts from the left end of the heel flap + 1 st from between the flap and needle II. Using Inspiration, knit the 4 flap sts and knit the picked-up sts through the back loop. Knit the sts on needles II and III. Using the needle with 4 sts, pick up 11(12) sts from the right end of the flap + 1 st from between needle III and the flap. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop and knit the 4 flap sts.
With these 58(62) sts work stockinette st and begin gusset decreases: at the end of needle I, k2tog; at the beginning of needle IV, skp. Repeat the decreases every other round until 48(56) sts remain. Redistribute the sts so that there are 12(14) sts on each needle.
Note: After completing the gusset decreases, work a colourwork stripe following rows 1-21 of the chart.
Then work stockinette st using Inspiration. On the second round, decrease 1 st at the midpoint and end of each needle = 40(48) sts.
When the sole measures 17(19) cm or when the sock covers your fifth toe, begin toe decreases: join Islet and k2tog at the midpoint and end of each needle = 32(40) sts. Work 3(4) rounds even, then repeat the decreases = 24(32) sts. Work 2(3) rounds even and repeat the decreases = 16(24) sts. After each decrease round work 1 round less between the decreases. Continue in this manner until 8 sts remain.
Break yarn, pull it through the sts and securely weave in.
Knit the other sock in the same manner.
Finishing
Lightly steam the socks.
