Onnenjuuri Socks

Novita’s striped yarns are an easy solution if you want to make beautiful multicoloured socks! Designed by Sisko Sälpäkivi, the Onnenjuuri socks feature a colourwork pattern combining the striped Nalle Raita yarn and the single-colour Nalle. This is a fun and easy project which will surprise you on every row.

Stitch patterns Ribbing in the round: *k2, p2*, repeat *–*.Stockinette stitch in the round: knit all rounds.Colourwork in the round: work stockinette st following the chart and instructions.

Gauge 26 sts in colourwork = 10 cm / 4 in

Using the main colour, cast on 48(60) sts and divide them across four needles, 12(15) sts each.The beginning of round is between needles I and IV.Work ribbing in the round for 8(10) rounds.Knit 1 round.

Begin the colourwork pattern on row 1 of chart I(II). Repeat the 4 st pattern 12(15) times.Work rows 2–21(30).Break yarns.

Size 30: slip 2 sts from needle III to needle IV.

Begin heel flap: slip the sts of needle I onto needle IV = 26(30) sts. Leave the other sts on hold.Turn work.Using the main colour, purl to end, evenly decreasing 2 sts = 24(28) sts.

Turn work and begin reinforced stitch pattern:

Row 1:(RS) *slip 1 with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *–* to end.Turn work.

Row 2:(WS) slip 1 with yarn in back, purl to end.Turn work.

Repeat rows 1–2 a total of 12(14) times = 24(28) rows.

Begin turning the heel. Continue the reinforced pattern as established.Work the RS row until 9(10) sts remain.Skp, turn work.Slip 1, p6(8), p2tog, turn work.Slip 1, work to last 8(9) sts, skp.Continue as established, decreasing at the ends with 8(10) sts in the centre. When only the centre sts remain, divide the heel flap sts onto needles I and IV, 4(5) sts each.Knit the 4(5) sts of needle IV to move your yarn.The beginning of round is now here, at the sole.

Using needle I with 4(5) sts, pick up 13(14) sts from the left end of the flap.Following row 1 of chart III(IV), knit the 4(5) heel flap sts and knit the picked-up sts through the back loop.Needles II and III: follow the chart.

Using needle IV, pick up 13(14) sts from the other end of the flap.Following the chart, knit the picked-up sts through the back loop and knit the 4(5) flap sts.56(68) sts now on the needles.

Work rows 2−8 of chart III(IV), working the gusset decreases as shown.48(60) sts on the needles after the decreases.Size 30: redistribute the sts so that there are 12 sts on all needles.

Work rows 9–23(36) of chart III(IV).If needed, keep repeating rows 20–23(33–36).

Note:When the sole measures 15(20) cm / 6(7.75) in or when the sock covers the fifth toe, switch to using the main colour only and begin toe decreases: at the end of needles I and III, k2tog, k1.At the beginning of needles II and IV, k1, skp.Repeat the decreases on every other round until 24(32) sts remain, 6(8) sts on each needle.Repeat the decreases on every round until 8 sts remain (2 sts on each needle).

Break yarn, pull it through the sts and securely weave in.

Knit the other sock in the same manner.

Finishing

Steam lightly.
