Novita Nalle: Neva socks

The Neva socks, knitted using Novita Nalle, feature a pattern inspired by the cross tattooed on Stella Harasek's wrist, reminding her of the importance of living in the moment.

Stitch patterns
Ribbing in the round: *k1, p1*
Stockinette stitch in the round: knit all rows.
Colourwork in the round:
work stockinette st in the round following the chart and instructions. Twist floats longer than 5 sts around each other at different points on back-to-back rows.

Using Linen, cast on 56 sts and divide them onto four double-pointed needles, 14 sts each. The beginning of round is between needles I and IV. Work ribbing in the round for 3 cm.

Begin the colourwork pattern on row 1 of the chart. Repeat the 14 st pattern 4 times. Work rows 2-20 of the chart. If you need to, switch to larger needles for the colourwork section to keep the fabric loose.

Break off Graphite and work stockinette st in the round using Linen.

When the leg measures approx. 15 cm, begin the heel flap: knit the sts on needles I and II onto the same needle = 28 sts. Leave the other sts on hold. Turn work.

Reinforced stitch pattern:

Row 1: (WS) slip 1 with yarn in back, purl to end. Turn work.

Row 2: (RS) *slip 1 with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *-* to last st, k1.

Work rows 1-2 a total of 14 times (= 28 rows).

Work the WS row once more.

Begin French heel turn:

Row 1: (RS) slip 1 with yarn in back, k15, skp (= slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass the slipped st over), k1. Turn work.

Row 2: (WS) slip 1 with yarn in front, p5, p2tog, p1. Turn work.

Row 3: slip 1 with yarn in back, knit to last st before gap, skp, k1. Turn work.

Row 4: slip 1 with yarn in front, purl to last st before gap, p2tog, p1. Turn work.

Keep repeating rows 3-4 until there are 16 sts on the needles. Finish on a WS row. Knit the sts and divide them onto two needles, 8 sts each.

Using a free needle pick up 14 sts from the left end of the heel flap + 1 st from between the flap and needle III. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop onto needle II which has 8 sts. Keep working stockinette st on needles III and IV. Using needle I (8 sts), pick up 14 sts from the right end of the flap + 1 st from between needle IV and the flap. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop, k8. The beginning of round is still at the side of the sock.

Work stockinette st and begin gusset decreases: at the end of needle II, k2tog; at the beginning of needle I, skp. Repeat the decreases on every other round until 56 sts remain. Redistribute the sts so that there are 14 sts on each needle.

Work stockinette st until the sole measures 19 cm or when the sock covers your fifth toe.

Begin toe decreases: at the beginning of needle I k1, skp; at the end of needle II, k2tog, k1; at the beginning of needle III, k1, skp; at the end of needle IV, k2tog, k1. Repeat the decreases on every other round until 6 sts remain on each needle.

Redistribute the sts onto two needles, 12 sts each on instep and sole. Graft the sts together.

Knit the other sock in the same manner.
