Novita Nalle: Juuri colorwork socks

What would a walk in the woods be without wool socks? The two-colour Juuri socks are an easy project even for a beginner in colourwork. The dark ornamental colourwork pattern on the leg stands out beautifully against the light base colour. The heel of these simple socks is worked in reinforced stitch. The socks are knitted from Novita Nalle yarn.

Gauge:
25 sts in stockinette st or colourwork (if necessary, change to larger needles for the colourwork) = 10 cm / 4 in

1

Beginning

With Linen, cast on 56(64)72 sts and divide them onto four needles, 14(16)18 sts on each. The beginning of round is between needles I and IV. Work ribbing in the round for 4 cm / 1½ in.

2

With Linen, work 2(3)4 rounds in stockinette st.

3

Begin the colourwork on round 1 of the chart and repeat the 8 st pattern 7(8)9 times. Work rounds 2–37 of the chart. Work the rest of the sock with Linen.

4

Work 2(3)4 rounds in stockinette st.

5

Begin the heel flap: knit the sts on needle I onto needle IV and at the same time decrease 2(2)2 sts = 26(30)34 sts. Leave the other sts on hold. Turn work and work in reinforced stitch pattern:

Row 1: (WS) slip 1 with yarn in back (on the WS of the work), purl to end. Turn work.

Row 2: (RS) *slip 1 with yarn on the WS, k1*, repeat *–* to end of row.

Work rows 1–2 a total of 13(15)16 times [= 26(30)32 rows].

6

Work a WS row and begin turning the heel: continue the reinforced stitch pattern as established. Work the RS row of the heel flap until 9(11)12 sts remain at the other end. Skp (slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass the slipped st over), turn work. Slip 1, p8(8)10, p2tog, turn work. Slip 1, work to last 8(10)11 sts, skp. Continue in this manner, decreasing the side sts while there are always 10(10)12 sts in the middle. When no side sts remain, divide the heel flap sts onto two needles [5 and 5 sts (5 and 5 sts) 6 and 6 sts]. The beginning of round is now here.

7

Using a free needle, pick up 14(15)16 sts from the left edge of the heel flap + 1 st from between the flap and needle II. Knit the picked-up sts through the back loop onto needle I. Knit the sts on needles II and III. Using the needle with 5(5)6 sts, pick up 14(15)16 sts from the right edge of the heel flap + 1 st from between needle III and the flap, knit the picked-up sts through the back loop and knit the 5(5)6 flap sts.

8

Continue in stockinette st on all 68(74)82 sts and work the gusset decreases: at the end of needle I, k2tog; at the beginning of needle IV, skp. Repeat the decreases on every other round until 56(60)64 sts remain. Redistribute the sts so that there are 14(15)16 sts on each needle.

9

Continue in stockinette st until the sole measures 19(21)23 cm / 7½(8¼)9 in or until the sock covers the little toe.

10

Begin the toe decreases (band toe): at the end of needles I and III, k2tog, k1; at the beginning of needles II and IV, k1, skp. Repeat the decreases on every other round until 5(6)7 sts remain on each needle. Then decrease on every round.

11

When 8 sts remain, break the yarn and pull it through the sts. Pull tight and weave in the end securely on the WS.

Knit the other sock in the same way.

12

Finishing

Steam the finished socks lightly.
